Gout: I was told 3 years ago that I had high levels of uric acid in my blood and that I would probably suffer with gout in the near future..Well it finally did me in striking my big toe... After the emergency room and a visit to my doctor I was placed on allupurinol which I have been taking with the ACV (organic) for 1 month now, I have completely changed my diet and no longer drinking beer as I did quite frequently during the week...so far I have a slight ache in my foot from time to time and also my hips.. I have lost 10 pounds and intend to go all the way with the weight loss which should allow me to stop taking my diuretics for blood pressure and hopefully the outcome will be completely getting off allupurinol and blood pressure medicine, eating a gout healthy diet and drinking ACV...

Eating lots of cherries, canned is fine, is supposed to help gout.

Wanting to cut back on my hard liquor consumption, I switched to red wine for about ten days. Just two glasses with my evening meal. Sure enough, it triggered my second gout attack. The first one required medication and took weeks to eliminate the agony. Thank God I found this site and thanks to all who wrote in about organic ACV. I went to the Whole Foods Market immediately and took about 3 ounces with 14 ounces of water. Whoeee that is stronger than straight 151 proof rum!! I did not add honey being diabetic. The pain in my right foot was reduced 80% by the next morning and completely eliminated within 48 hours. You have my complete and total gratitude.

Add me as another success story. After thanksgiving dinner, I woke up on Friday with a lot of pain on my right toe. I know I have a somewhat high level of uric acid but my doctor told me I only needed to reduce my red meat intake (which I've been doing for the last year). What the doctor didn't tell me is turkey meat is also associated with uric acid. I've been consuming a lot of turkey meat to make up for the lack of beef.

After reading this thread I decided to visit the grocery store and get the ACV. I drank about three glasses of a mix 10% ACV, 90% water and went to sleep. Next morning, no more limping. It's Monday and I can move my fingers no problem. I can even jump. I'll keep drinking ACV with water, orange juice, etc The taste is not too bad. I'm also adding it to my salads. I'll be ordering ACV capsules soon. Of course, I'll reduce my meat intake. It seems only fish is safe to eat.

Give it a shot even if you haven't had a gout attack.

just over a month ago I went to the ER with chest pains (I have an irregular hear heat) and what I thought was a painful blood clot in my right foot. Turns out I had a real high level of uric acid. I was told by my family doctor who I saw for a follow up to lay off all red meat, chicken, turkey. I only eat red meat once a week now and take ACV twice a day with 10 oz of cherry juice. I went back to the doctors office a month later and was retested for the uric acid level and was found to be in normal range. I use the (_____s) brand. This has been wondeful. Arrhythmia

I also noticed that my acid reflux has almost gone away completely! I used to take pepsid ac two to three times a day. now I am lucky if I take it once to twice a week.

Since starting this diet my arrhythmia has almost gone away. I feel so much better then I have felt over the past year. I just need to lose some weight now.

Reading the posts here, a question pops out. ACV is supposed to REDUCE acidity (or keep body alkalinity high)? How does that work since the PH of any vinegar is acidic? I'm gonna give it a try anyway but it is certainly counter-intuitive.

Wow, I spent several hours going through your site and others regarding gout and the causes and cures. I had already started to get hydrated by drinking a bunch of water. The pain that has be on and off for about two months and pretty bad the last couple days has subsided a bit. Well enough that I went to the Movies with my wife tonight. When we returned the pain was back to a higher level. BTW, I have not been diagnosed with Gout, but have all the symptoms. All the foods to avoid I love and have been trying to loose a little weight lately. We eat pretty healthy, mainly Bison and veggies. A couple days a week we eat vegan. So, finally after reading many comments on your site, I decided that since I had some ACV with "Mothers" in it on the shelf in the pantry, I would try 3 Tablespoons in a bit of water. I chugged it down about an hour and half ago. I sit here and can feel a tingle in my foot and the pain is going away as I sit here. I can wiggle my toe up and down with almost no pain, where before I could wiggle my toe, but there was pain. About a 7 on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most painful.

Wow, is all I have to say. I really didn't expect that. I expected to wake up and have no change and have to take more to feel anything. I will certainly continue this daily. I drive a tour bus and will make sure to take ACV with me on the road. I guess it is like an apple a day....thanks

I know someone with gout and mentioned that apple cider vineger might work for her. She adamantly refuses to use it because she claims that acidic foods cause burning sensations when she urinates. I was disappointed since after reading the testimonies I thought it would be a great alternative to the meds she is currently taking for gout. Any thoughts/suggestions? She currently takes meds for her irregular heart beat as well. Thanks!

Worse gout attack since first time and extremely painful (left big toe, or more like foot!), and cherries and medicines didn't cure it this time (worked before).

ACV 2 Tbsp 2x/day with juice worked very well, 90% improvement quite quickly (about 3-4 days) and removed the intense pain and swelling, and could walk 85% fine (kinda limp a bit) again...

However, it's been more than a week since that "big improvement" and I continue taking the ACV, yet there seems to be very little improvement since then, and it's still 5 to 10% painful/immobilized, and still cannot "fully" bend my toe (although before I couldn't bend it at all, couldn't even touch it).

Any comments? =0

Suggestions for gout.

You should get some pH paper and measure your urine pH. I read that 60%-80% of uric acid is eliminated with the urine. If the pH of the urine is for example 7 instead of 5 (very acidic) then 1000 times more uric acid is dissolved in the urine.

You can increase the pH (less acidic) if you take your ACV with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). If you have water retention, half of the baking soda should be replaced with potassium bicarbonate or potassium citrate.

See https://www.earthclinic.com/remedies/alkalizing_formulas.html

Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda Formula
Two tablespoon of ACV plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. Take this two to three times a day on an empty stomach. It is supposed to give you more energy. The pH of this formula is about 7.

For People with Sodium Issues and Want to Alkalize
1/8 teaspoon of baking soda 1/16 teaspoon of potassium bicarbonate 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid. Add water to 1/2 glass of water. Take this twice a day once in the morning and once in the evening on an empty stomach. This is done to avoid diarrhea problems, if taken along with food.

More formulas can be found.

Try to find more of my posts in EC for other alkalizing suggestions.

Also, search the internet for "Alkalizing foot baths".

Good Luck

My husband has been suffering for gout for around fifteen years. Whenever he had an attack the medicine the docter gave him would make him very sick and he would lose weight and become very weak. It was awful to see him in so much pain,he could not even stand for the bed sheet to rub his foot. I decided to try to find a natural cure for gout that might help him so i went searching on the internet and came upon this site. I read all the post about AVC greatly relieving and even curing peoples gout,I got very excited and since we had some on hand I got my husband to take the recomended dose that same night and the next day.I had great hopes that the ACV would help him but my hopes where dashed the next morning when he woke up with his big toe very swollen and in pain. I felt awful! He had not even been having an attack when I got him to try the ACV and now here he was in lots of pain after taking the ACV.....Not only did he have an attack but where he usually only got it in his feet for the next six months its spread from his big toe to his knees and on up into his hand and then into his elbow. All in all the attacks came one after the other for six months. Half of the year he was in almost constant pain! Now he has a HUGE knot on his elbow because the attack there was the worst one.

I have never felt worse in my life watching him in so much pain and feeling that I caused it because it was my idea for him to try ACV. I was desperate to help him and started asking local pharmacies what to do for him and it just so happened that one of the owners happened to have gout himself and told me to get my husband some cherry concentrate, he said it helped him better then anything. I found some black cherry concentrate at a local _____ for twenty dollars and even though I was now weary of home remedies I figured it really couldnt hurt so I had my husband start drinking the cherry concentrate and i am so glad i did because after about a week his attack in his elbow receded and now two months later he hasnt had anymore attacks. He walks better then he has in a long time.
From what I have read on here it seems as if ACV has worked for many people but my advice to anyone that is thinking of trying it for gout is, Please be very careful and weigh all your options before trying ACV or at least start out in a very small dose.

Thank You

As you can see from my email below, the ACV helped me 90% but not completely. However, while ACV was helping, it's interesting to note that INITIALLY, my big toe swelled more for about 3 hours with throbbing and some pain before it finally subsided and got it 90% cured quite quickly.

I suspect that the increased throbbing (with some pain) was the ACV sorta "dissolving" the "hardened" uric acid crystals in my toe and later eliminating it from my system. Maybe in your husband's case (15 years) there was just so much uric acid deposits that the dissolving/throbbing/pain process was more intense and takes longer than the 2-3 hours it took for me.

Just a guess; I'm no doctor.. but then again, doesn't seem like conventional doctors know about the true physical effects "earth medicines" either! lol

Have been suffering from 1st onset of gout for months now, from knee down on both legs. Severe edema in both legs. Have not found a cure yet but will try some of the recipes found here. To the woman whose husband suffered from gout for 15 yrs, honey, you may have used the processed ACV. The vinegar you need to use is the organic apple cidar vinegar with the "stringy mother" in it. It's brown & gross looking but is the only one that works. It's loaded with potassium, vit c & nutrients you won't find in the processed junk. Doctors have been useless and I won't take the dangerous meds; however, the organic apple cidar vinegar provides relief & helps get rid of the fluid build-up that's so painful. Will try a combination of the treatments I see here & will let you know what works. ACV does provide enough relief for me to function but attack so severe, guess it's going to take a combination or longer length of time for cure & I'm not willing to wait longer.

Thank you for the info on ORGANIC apple cider vinegar. I totally agree it MUST be organic. My husband has suffered for gout for years, he was 60 when his first attack came. He was always very active but this horrible ailment stopped him in his tracks..literally. Conventional doctors are no help..they just prescribe meds with all kind of side effects and who knows what kind of problems they will cause down the road. It's a quick easy fix..which most people want. The real cure is possible but most people do not have the fortitude or ability to deprive themselves of all the unhealthy eating habits and mind altering substances that cause all the problems in the long run.

My husband went to a medical Doctor who trained in alternative healing with a famous MD and authority on Alternative healing. His prescripion was very simple..but also complex in other ways. He claimed that Gout is a sympton of clogged internal filters which need to be cleansed by detoxing. Basically the kidneys and lover are not functioning to capacity. He gave my husband a protocol which I did with him for support and why not optimize my own health.

For the first 2 weeks cut out everything acidic. Alcohol, caffine, animal fat (all red meat). Basically become a vegetarian. No white flour, refined sugar or gluten or wheat products. 64 oz of water and or herbal tea..no caffine. The next 7 days consists of 16oz of Green Juice from organic greens 4X per day. 8am 11am 2pm and 5pm in addition to 64 oz water/herbal tea. Enzymes and probotics are also recommended as well as other dietary supplements like a quality multivitamin.

Last but not least..get ready for this one..Daily Tap Water Retention Enema 1x per day. 1qt. water in bag with 4 drops lemon juice. Hold water in roll to left side hold 3 minutes if possible, come up to all 4's head slightly lower than your butt..hold 3 min..roll to right side hold 3 minutes..finally position self against wall and raise legs up wall..hold 3 minutes..after this release into toilet. If cramp deep breaths help. and messaging lower abs...This routine helps to relieve toxic substances and toxic effects from fast such as headaches and edginess. Rigourous exercise not recommended. Important to slow down.

The juice fast ingredients are: 1/2 cucumber, handful of parsley, 5 stalks of kale, 3 stalks fennel, 3 stalks of celery and 5 stems of dandelion, all organic. Add a small piece of ginger root. Coming off the fast is very important. Just some brown rice and steamed green vegitable, salads..no vinegar very acidic use lemon juice and olive oil. You cannot jump back into old eating pattern. Vegetarian life style works well for gouts sufferers or limit your animal protein. Rice pasta is a good alternative with olive oil and garlic. Light fish such as sole, flounder, snapper, cod..no shellfish..highly acidic. Try to substitute green tea for coffee which is also very acidic.

My husband has been gout free for 3 years. If it comes back he will just go through the protocol again. A small price to pay for good health and no more pain! Check out the work of Gabriel Cousens and the Tree of Life Rejuvination center. They are very radical and proponants of eating only raw vegetarian food but they have good tips on detoxing and how to do it safely. You can find them on line. Also retreat centers like Kripalu in Lenox Mass. and Omega in Rhinebeck NY offer supervised week long fasts. Good Luck!!! Oh yes..yoga and meditation are great ways to heal the body and the mind and learn to slow down.

I've got over 10 times of gout attack randomly around 7-8 years and now I'm having the 11th so I found this web site. I agree with Michael when the remedy works it dissolves the crystal so this happened to me is more painful to the joint(imagine the mountain of needles are breaking so you get more needles in the fluid), but after the overnight of deadly painful I will get better.

I didn't try the ACV but my handy remedy is mixing lemon juice with baking soda (half piece of lemon's juice mixing with baking soda until no more bubble developed, then dilute with glass full of water)

Also, I'm taking over the counter painful killer

However, I think any natural remedy is good for minor to moderate cases and I'm sure drinking water is the most natural one.

After first few attacks I never go to physician again because they don't understand your painful and they cannot monitor your situations at home.

apple cider vinegar dose for Gout: Do you have to use water when you drink your dose... or are 100% apple juice or grape juice acceptable companions. It did rid me of gout over a few days, where before nothing was helping. I have been using them, or a mineral water drink to mask the taste of the vinegar, I just dont want to cancel out any of it's effectiveness, now that I am moving to the maintenance doses. I figured apple or grape juice would be fine, since you can make vinegar from the fruit. any thoughts are helpful.

I last had gout 8 years ago. It was a very bad attack and the doc gave me Naprosyn but unfortunately the attack lasted for weeks. Last week after too much cheese and wine, I felt another attack coming on. My big toe started swelling and was inflamed and red. The pain was building up and I prayed it wasn't going to be another fully-fledged attack. I found this site and sent for some organic acv. I took a couple of tablespoons in a glass of water 3 times a day and adapted my diet to include lots of water, celery, cherries, strawberries, salad, radish and other healthy stuff. I also took some turmeric, vit C, chelated magnesium and milk thistle.

I bought some comfrey oil and put some on the toe. (I once cured a badly frozen shoulder with a poultice of comfrey leaves from my garden). Within about 3 days, the pain lessened, the swelling went down and I could walk again. Boy was I relieved. It was like winning the lottery. I have had several attacks of gout over the years and I do not want that pain again. I refused to see a doctor after the tablets he prescribed last time had little or no effect - except possibly side-effects.

I will take a maintenance dose of ACV and I sincerely hope that anyone who has gout can control it with ACV and the right diet. Keep off those drugs.

I couldn't understand the last few weeks why my feet were getting so bad again, when they have seemed practically cured for over six months. Then it occurred to me. I had run out of my jug of apple cider vinegar (with the mother in it) and with so much going on having summer guests and whatnot, I had forgotten to replace it.

It made perfect sense why my feet were getting so bad again and I was in misery - so I got another bottle yesterday and did my usual 6 oz of water with a tablespoon of the vinegar mixed in (no honey or anything else) and sipped it all morning until it was gone, then had another glass (same mixture) in the late afternoon.

My feet this morning are so improved, I can't believe it. Of course I am not skipping this little daily drink again (also using it in salad dressing and in any recipes that call for vinegar). It truly does work!

EC: Hi Debi. Are you referring to gout or an arthritic condition? We're posting this on the gout page in the meantime...

I tried the 2 tbl in water 3 times a day for 2 days and have now been painfree for 5 days. I am waiting to see how long it takes any pain to return but so far I would agree this offers VERY quick relief.

While doing some web research to help a friend find relief from gout, I discovered I was suffering with it after seeing photos and reading about the symptoms - swollen big toe, red spots, and of course, excruciating pain.

My sister is a vehement advocate of apple cider vinegar (ACV) and honey for anything that ails you; consequently, I checked it out on the Internet as a gout remedy, and the overwhelming response from people was that it worked wonders.

Being an ex-investigative environmental journalist, I wanted to find out why for my own satisfaction. From the preponderance of anecdotal testimonies alone, my research overwhelming indicated that ACV has helped people with a host of maladies, and has been used for thousands of years for everything from foot fungus to kidney ailments.

However, in spite all the positive personal testimonies as to ACV's effectiveness, I couldn't find any any substantive scientific research to back to back the glowing testimonials. In fact. When I finally found the analysis for trace minerals in ACV, the amount people take should have no impact whatsoever on any malady. Acetic acid is about the only active ingredient that would impact anything.

So eliminating myself from any placebo effect bias, I tried a few tablespoons of ACV in water. It alleviated the major symptoms shortly after the first dose. After two days, I only have some residual pain in the ball of my foot instead what felt like festering boil two days before.

Alright: I'm 52/male, not overweight (although not the most fit I've ever been), no injuries or sprains in my feet. And for the first time in my life (it started yesterday)... An excrutiating pain developed almost instantly in my right big toe. From what I've read, it's probably gout? So I'm trying the apple cider vinegar in water approach, just drank it at 9:45PM... I will report here again what kind of results (if any) I get. WISH ME LUCK!

Reporting back (as promised) with the apple cider vinegar & water approach: ZERO POSTIIVE EFFECT! FYI, I used a Kroger private label brand, not sure if that matters? It's nearly 11 hours later, can barely bend my big toe (pain seems to be sourcing from the first joint), still swollen. My toe was throbbing and banging so hard last night, I didn't get much sleep and damn near started crying. Any ideas out there folks?

Uhg. I know that feeling all too well. You can try the 'ol massive NSAID like Ibuprofen for the inflammation. Or the doc will give you a stronger one like indomethacin. I take 2 to 3 times the recommended over-the-counter recommended dose of Ibuprofen (per doctors advice). Combine that with Tylenal (for the pain). Don't take Asperin. Tylenal and NSAID's can be taken together.

The downside to this approach are the side-affects of NSAID's. They can put a hurt on your stomach.

I've had gout for years and just started taking ACV last night. Jury is still out for me.

Just read more information saying apple cider vinegar actually turns into alcohol in the body - exactly what you DON'T want for gout. Who knows? But I know this: It's nearly 16 hours since I started hammering down several doses of the vinegar & water mixture and... My toe is just as sore & swollen (maybe even more). Bummer.

If the ACV doesn't work, try dark cherry juice concentrate. It is the bomb-diggity for gout. :) It's thick like syrup, and you can buy it at GNC. Take one tablespoon 2-3 times per day and you'll be good to go in no time.

June 25, 2011. Reporting again on my first-time "bout with gout" and what I've been doing to address it. It hit fast & hard on June 18, and it's still very bad (June 25). Although I realize this didn't manifest overnight, it may not be realistic to expect an instant cure (although I welcome that). Not sure if I'm just more used to the pain, or if there's improvement, or both. The toe is still swollen/throbbing/stiff & sore, plus some redness.

I have tried: No booze of any kind; ACV with "Mother" & water; Black Cherry Juice extract (tasty as hell no doubt); garlic tablets; Cherry fruit extract capsules; "Total Cleanse" Uric Acid capsules from Solaray; lots of water; ice pack. Just now, I tried mixing some baking soda with water & drank that down.

I will report back again if there's any progress to report (please GOD!!! ). This really sucks folks.

Hi Money -

My husband has had gout a couple of times a year for the past decade. It doesn't seem to matter what he eats or doesn't eat. He has had it in his big toe, his ankle, and his knee. I therfor consider myself somewhat of a gout "wife-expert".

But - BIG BUT!!!! ~ his has never lasted as long as you have been suffering (and yes, I know the suffering.... I damned near want to kill him by the time he is on the mend.) ;-)

Questions / Suggestions: Have you been icing it? Apply ice - 20 mins on, 20 mins off. A bag of frozen peas or corn with a hand towel wrapped around it works really well. You will be amazed at what elevating the offending joint, and applying ice can do....

Have you been to a doctor? Some other very bad things can look like gout. I remember one of the very first times my husband had it in his ankle, and they thought it might be cellulitis. If it is cellulitis, you need an IV of antibiotics, asap. If it is HOT and RED, and is not better after this many days, you NEED medical attention.

I am not a big fan of the standard medical field - have not had a prescription shoved down my throat in years.... And here this is my second post of the day suggesting someone see a doctor... Something is out of alignment in / with the universe. lol.

I hope you are feeling better by now, so this post is not necessary... but if you are not - please consider what I said.

:-) ~Carly

Thank you for this web site and for the posts. I had severe gout pain every day for 2 months, so I gave in and tried the medicines the doctor prescribed. They made me so sick I could not take them. I tried ACV (1 TSP ACV, 1 TSP Honey, 4-6 oz of hot water- makes a decent tasting hot tea) a couple times a day, cherry juice, and ibuprofen cream. The pain went away within 2 days. I know the ACV is working as I had never tried it before; I had been eating a lot of cherries and that helped for a while, but not enough when it got severe. I wanted to share the ibuprofen cream idea as I did not see it on this web site. My wife uses it on her jaw for TMJ, so I thought I'd try it. I just rub some into the joint before bed and/ or in the morning and it seems to reduce swelling and increase mobility and decrease pain. It's called homeopathic ibuprofen cream for muscles and joints and it works well.

I have had a swollen, painful big toe joint on my right foot for over two years. The left foot was becoming dotted with red spots as well as swelling in both ankles. Went to the Dr. in March, 2009 and he dignosed Gout and gave me 100mg of allopurinol daily. No improvement as of April 29. I looked up Gout cures on the internet that night and saw Apple Cider Vinegar being used with positive results. I remember family members who are all gone now, taking honey and apple cider vinegar for lots of ailments, so thought, what the heck. I took 3 tablespoons of cider yesterday a.m., last night and this morning I have no pain nor redness. This is unbelievable. I also stopped taking the meds which I know you aren't to do. These results in my case are amazing. My wife cannot believe all the redness disappeared overnight. I hope this keeps up.

I was very skeptical when trying ACV but then what do I have to lose? Well after 3 days I'm limping worse than when I started ACV. Before I can limp around but now it seems like it's spread to other joints in my foot that I'm not able to even move around at all. I was doing 2 tbs 1 cup of water for 3 times a day and taking Shark Cartlidge pills. I have a Disney World trip with my family the end of May. I hope to God it is gone then so I've not given up on ACV just yet.
