DIY Natural Hair Gel

If you would like to avoid using ingredients that are found in antifreeze and can disrupt your hormones you can make your own personal care products. One of the easiest personal care products to make is natural hair gel!

Why You Should Make Your Own Hair Gel

Have you ever looked at the ingredient list for hair gels? Many are quite long with ingredients that are unpronounceable.

Propylene glycol is a common ingredient in personal care products, like hair gel. Propylene glycol is also a component of antifreeze!

Methylparaben and other parabens are often in hair gels. Parabens are suspected endocrine disruptors and suspected in some cancers.1 Better to be safe than sorry with questionable ingredients, especially when you have cheap and easy DIY options!

Chemical laden body care products have been linked to other health issues as well, including dermatitis, dandruff, dry skin and hair, premature aging of the skin, allergies, and eczema.

Using DIY body care products that are so safe you can eat them makes sense!

You can make hair gel with as little as two ingredients – gelatin powder and water.

Recipe DIY Hair Gel

  • ½ cup warm water
  • ½ teaspoon gelatin powder
  • Whisk water and gelatin powder together.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • Apply to damp or wet hair and style as desired.

It is THAT simple.

You can add a tiny amount of essential oil (no more than a drop or two) to your hair gel, but don’t go overboard with essential oils because they too may cause hormone imbalances!

While store bought hair gel can be hard on your hair, water and gelatin are good for your hair. Aloe is another common ingredient in DIY hair gel. It too has nourishing properties. You can add 2 teaspoons of aloe to the recipe above if you wish to have the benefit of aloe for your hair as well.
