I recently drank baking soda in water to try and treat a UTI that came on very suddenly. I saw somewhere online to take 1 tsp baking soda in 2 cups of water. Then an hour or two later, I took 1 tsp of the baking soda in 1 cup of water, then it said to have some chamomile tea after that. I did this, then repeated with some baking soda water (about 1 tsp per cup or cup and a half) several times over the next day or two. I was prepared to take some antibiotics that my husband had stopped taking from a recent dental procedure, because I was doubtful that the baking soda would work, but Voila! I was cured of the UTI symptoms with just the baking soda water and trying to drink/void more often.

The bonus was, I had the beginnings of a vaginal infection, and that also went away. And the sore throat/bad cold that I was fighting subsided much more quickly than I thought, once I started taking the baking soda. I'm very interested in all the varied claims, and how it can work. I worry a little about the saltiness of the baking soda, but think if I use it moderately, then supplement with folic acid and B vitamin supplements, plus increase my calcium intake, that hopefully I should be okay.

Thanks for sharing your experiences!

I had a bladder infection for more than a year, where the doctor kept putting me on antibiotics, but they didn't work. So I went online, and found where a gal had drank a glass of water with just 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda every hour on the hour for eight hours; by the third glass I was feeling great. (smile)
Haven't had another bladder infection. (grin)

This is my 4th bladder infection this year. :( I hate having to go to the doctor and taking antibiotics so I looked at your website. (Last time I took antibiotics, I ended up getting a yeast infection also. Go figure.) I don't know about other people, but when I have a bladder infection, I end up in bed miserable for at least 1/2 of my day (in between painful, constant urinations.) Then afterwards when the antibiotics kick in and the pain is a little better, by that time I'm exhausted and miserable.

I used 1/2 tablespoon of baking soda to 8 ounces of water, and low and behold, the pain stopped within 15 minutes and I was able to urinate more normally. Just to be safe I drank plenty of water and had 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.

My bladder infection went away extremely fast and incredibly less painful than curing with antibiotics! (Let alone, cheaper!) Thank you for your advice everyone!

MH: Did you take the baking soda and water orally or via douching? Thanks

EC: Probably took it orally...

I had this horrible bladder infection yesterday and drank water and tea all day. It helped me go to the bathroom but the burning would not go away. I found a receipe on the web: boil 3 onions in 4 or 5 cups of water and drink the juice. I tried that and the burning did not go away. I drank herbal tea 3 kinds cranberry, echinnacea, cherry stem tea. I helped a bit but got fed up and drank lukewarm water with baking soda (2cups) That did it. Another cup of echinnacea. Today I feel much better and went to natural food store and bought probiotic, apple cider and cranberry pills. I will have more baking soda later tonight. Sue

WORKED TEMPORARILY

I drank 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a tall glass of water, and it did seem to help my bladder infection a bit, but not enough to prevent me from having to go to the doctor two hours later.

I have chronic bladder problems (Interstitial Cystitis) and am always looking for something to make it better. I drank 1/2 tsp of baking soda in some water during the worst possible bladder pain ever. In 15 minutes the pain was gone. I feel that the baking soda made the urine less acidic and that let my bladder be less irritated. Anyway, baking soda did what hundreds of dollars of meds could not do--make me feel better!

A friend asked me if I had any antibiotics that she could take for a recurring bladder infection. I told her to skip the antibiotics and the potential negative side effects associated with them and just drink some baking soda mixed in water. I made her a 16oz. bottle of water with two teaspoons of baking soda in it. She drank that in the afternoon and made herself another one in the evening before going to bed. In the morning she made one more bottle and she called me that evening and told me she felt "normal" again!

She also told me that she takes a couple of very potent prescription drugs for her rheumatoid arthritis and one of the side effects is that she get's small ulcer type sores in her mouth that are very painful. Her doctor told her that this happens often because of the medication, but gave her nothing to help the problem. I told her to swish the baking soda water around in her mouth before swallowing it. After the three bottles that she drank for her bladder infection she said the sores went away also! Baking soda is some good stuff!

It's been about two weeks since she drank those three bottles and she tells me she has had no more problems and will definitely go with baking soda over antibiotics next time she has another bladder infection.

Baking Soda and Molasses

How to Kill a Urinary Tract Infection

Baking Soda and Molasses helped me to get rid of a deadly UTI. As a single again woman, trying to impress God, I have fought like a manic to keep my life clean. And since I have no one who knows this as well as the Good Lord Himself, If I have to say so myself, I have done a pretty good job these past thirty years to live single and separated from the special privileges of marriage since I am not married. So where did this UTI come from?

All I know is, I came down with pneumonia, the hospital gave me antibiotics, which cleaned out the pneumonia and left me with a UTI. Since I was seemly, out of date with fighting a UTI in my older age it act like it came to stay. My body forced me to give up sugars and starches because it made the conditions worse. I tried so many things that Earth Clinic and the internet suggested: probiotics, baking soda, vinegar, garlic, folic acid, over the counter suppositories etc. that somewhat help but did not cure this condition.

The UTI seemed to want to outlive me! Turn to your neighbor and say, "it cannot stay, it cannot stay." A week had passed, two weeks had passed and none of the oldies seemed to work. But praise be to God I came across what some people call the Cancer Cure and decided to try it. "Ha, ha, ha it worked for me. I laughing because though I suffered with this about three months, and it even took most of my hair with it, ( I tell you that UTI had the devil in it), I out lived it! .

I used Molasses and Baking soda, and sometimes Honey and baking soda dissolved in hot water. Even though as a norm sweet was not allowed on my diet, this sweetness seemed to do actually what they said. The article said the molasses or honey was bait to draw the baking soda in the cells to kill the bacteria or cancer cells.

I tried to be nice, as a Bible walker you learn how to talk to the mountain. I tired saying, " Urinary track infection go! " And when the UTI would not listen, I had to get a now word from the Lord, and it was the Molasses and Baking Soda for me. I used to take it twice a day. ( ½ teaspoon of baking soda stirred in about a cup of heating water on the stove. Then stir in a tablespoon of molasses and drink hot or cold. I was immediately feeling better. I drank this until I was sure the UTI was dead. Another words, I took it until I was able to eat my regular foods without a back lapse.

I learned about body PH on Earth Clinic and I often wonder if it has to do with my body PH being too low that I fought with this so long.

It has been almost two years since I had the Pneumonia and its family, and I am still trying to strengthen my immune system. I am thinking that I should perhaps go back to my original low sugar diet until my hair makes a comeback. I think I will.

Baking Soda, Grapefruit Seed Extract

I suffered from UTIs my entire young adulthood. It wasn't until I started eating healthier and generally living a healthier lifestyle, that they went away. Forward 15 years and I suddenly get the familiar feeling. I can't believe it. I turn to my usual herbal extract (Usnea/Uva Ursi) but the bottle I had was 15 years old.

This infection was aggressive. 2 hours within the first tingle, I had blood in my urine and I would estimate my pain level at a 7 or 8. I started taking the old extract and had some relief. Pain decreased to a 2/3. I only had enough for 3 doses, not enough to cure it.

I went to the store and found 1 more bottle of extract. I used it, as I had before but as soon as I finished the bottle, the feeling came back. I couldn't find any more extract so I purchased a $35 product with D-mannose and some use and other things. I was determined to fight this naturally and the blood in the urine had not returned, the pain was starting to increase to a 5 and my kidneys were beginning to ache - I knew I didn't have much time before I would have to go to the doctor. I also didn't want to use a $35 product.

I researched my old natural healing books and decided to follow the baking soda regimen used in WWII, before they had flu medicine (google: Mercola baking soda regimen) It starts with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in water every two hours. I use it for flu/cold successfully all the time and I figured this bacteria would be no different. I would NOT recommend using the suggestion to consume a tsp or more of baking soda at one sitting (google: baking soda poisoning).

I added to that, grapefruit seed extract which I also had on hand for successfully fighting cold and flu. I did 10-15 drops in 12 ounces of water, every 3 hours. This stuff is NASTY. I held my breath and it was still so bitter, I winced every time I drank it. I didn't want to mix it with juice and add sugar to my system.

I had cut out all coffee, all beer, all spicy foods, all simple carbs and sugar for 4 days. These are things I love. If I could do it, you can to :) I drank dandelion tea 1x per day. I drank LOTS of water. I peed often to remove bacteria from bladder faster.

So, essentially, for 2 days, I was taking baking soda every 2 hours and grapefruit see extract every 3 hours. When I went to bed, I had a glass of water with 1/4 tsp of baking soda that I would sip through the night. Plus the above additions.

In 2 days, the infection was gone...and this had been an AGGRESSIVE bacteria. I believe it would have been antibiotic resistant if it caused blood in the urine and such intense pain so quickly. It took me a full bottle of a tincture + other methods when normally one day and half a tincture bottle would have done it. I also believe that an increase in sugar and beer (we had gone to a party the day before)vmade my system week to the attack.

Ball Stretch

Posted by Bony (Austin, Texas) on 04/25/2012

After years of bladder infections dr sent me to physical therapy (????) I could not understand this but since I had my kids thru cesarian section, she said my pelvic muscles were too tight and I had scar tissue etc so this would prevent me from emptying my bladder thoroughly. She gave me a ball which I am to lay on to loosen the tight muscles. I went about 3 times to therapy (it was embarassing because they stretch you ). Anyway, I really never did the exercises at home until today because I got another infection. I'm laying on the ball, have taken cranberry pills, vit c, yogurt, and I had to take antibiotic (have several refills). But I never want to have this infections again. I am also reading my Bible and praying for divine healing. God is awesome! Has anyone heard of this therapy? I'm gonna get probiotics tomorrow. Thank you all. God Bless you!

I cannot agree more with Nektar from Athens, Greece. Propolis has helped me tremendously with bleeding in uti.

I had a few utis in the past but they normally resolve themselves with lota of water and unsweetened cranberry juice.

One month ago, I had a scare of my life when my urine was bloody. I went to the doctor and was prescribed 3 days of antibiotics. I took the antibiotics with oregano oil and d mannose and uti healed after 5 days.

3 weeks after that, another uti flared up. This time, I wanted to let my body heal on its own and took many things like d mannose, cranberry capsules, acv, coconut oil, oil of oregano, tumeric, cinnamon oil, thyme oil, allicin capsules, garlic, juniper, clove, applied essential oils, avo, probiotics, consumed only vegetables and others. Sadly, once I do not urinate frequently (within an hour), the bleeding returns. Please note that I kept all these for 12 days.

It was until I read that propolis can help that I started propolis yesterday night and this morning. The bleeding has stopped even after not going to the toilet for an hour! The pain also minimised. I took 10 drops in some water and put a few drops into the toilet paper enough to cover my private parts until my next toilet trip.

I hope others can benefit from my experience too.

It's the first time I decide to contribute to the site, since I was helped in numerous conditions in the past. Nevertheless, despite the valuable advise, all these years I never seemed to find relief from UTI, a plague I thought I'd never gotten rid of. I'm now 37 and, other than the UTI's, a happy, healthy individual. I went through a nasty cystitis/urethritis once, caused by Esterichia Coli. Back then Mannose had helped, but I never felt well ever since. The year-long condition I used to suffer from, at least up until last month, is described as honeymoon cystitis.

Every time I've had a partner I had to live in an inhumane condition and suffer unbearable pain and misery, stinging, intolerable burning and urge to urinate which never eased, visits to the toilet day & night, totally unable to put up with underwear, go to work or do anything other than cry and suffer. I had tried everything. I was tested through numerous cultures of urine and vaginal fluid and the only thing ever found was Ureaplasma Urealyticum. I was given massive doses of antibiotics (once I had to take Vibramycin for 22 days), which didn't relieve me and only worsened my situation in the long run. I drank massive amounts of soda, my best bet being some minimum temporary relief. I am meticulously clean. I tried every natural aid in this site and elsewhere, literally everything, you name it, every bitter, gross herb/substance in nature. Homeopathy didn't help either.

Last summer, my cousin who's a bee-keeper, gave me a couple of bee propolis clumps to make a propolis tincture (I'm sure you can buy on-line, but here is the recipe, for those like me who want to try at home:

100gr. of pure, unprocessed propolis (cut in the size of peas) in a 720gr jar filled with 95% pure drinking alcohol.

Leave in a warm, dark place for 30 days, shaking the jar from time to time. After that, pour the tincture through a cloth in a bottle. Done).

Last month, exhausted from the year-long torture and excruciating pain I was suffering, I was driven to do something crazy: dampen a piece of cotton with drops of the propolis tincture and put it straight on my genitalia. The moment I did, I felt a horrible burning underneath, but my pain was so awful anyway (the night before I was peeing traces of blood and pus) that I decided I would put up with it as long as possible. I wasn't able to take it for more than 20 seconds. And that was it.

A couple of minutes after I had removed it, all pain stopped. I didn't need to go to the toilet anymore! I repeated an hour later. I drank a lot of water, ate a couple of garlic cloves, wore my underpants and went to work. I had my propolis bottle with me. The next 7-8 days I only had to apply the cotton once daily, in the morning, for a few seconds, and then I was ok for the rest of the day. I've also been taking 20 drops of the tincture in half a glass of water daily. Now, whenever we make love with my partner, I keep the old habit of rushing to the toilet right before and after, and at the slightest sign of unease I'm quick to apply propolis. I know I'll be suffering for about a minute, but I will be perfectly well the rest of the day/night - and without medication. Propolis is a wonder of nature, it saved my life and I really wanted to share it and help as many people as I can.

Thank you for your time.

You can prevent a lot of bladder infections by simply going to the bathroom after any sexual activity. Peeing right after sex pushes all the bacteria out that would go on in otherwise and cause an infections. Its also best to take a shower instead of baths but if you cant give up your baths it might help to pee right after them too.

There should be a section about causes for bladder infections. I realized mine were being casued my Method laundry detergent. I constantly had pain, but it went away the week the bottle of soap ran out. Always buy frangance free soap. Same goes for non-bleached tampons, ladies!

I hope everyone already knows to avoid all bubble baths because they are also known to cause bladder infections.

Bladder Infections---for Ladies Only:

My very first infection occured on my honeymoon in 1975! The doctor seemed to be condesending and diagnosed "honeymoon cystitis". I was frightened and miserable. The antibiotics did the trick. 30 years later and quite literally, 17 trips to the emergency roomlater, plus at least 3 courses of meds a year(do the math)...I have been UTI free for over a YEAR!!! I continue to be sexually active with my husband and this is the not so simple "light bulb moment for me"!!!

Last year when my husband was gone for 3 months, I felt an infection coming on and was dazed and confused since it had been MANY months since we were intimate. The only thing I could detect that I was doing different was taking over- the counter sleeping medication(Unisom) for sleeplessness! So while the infection was clearing up I started to connect every single episode of UTI's to those darn sleeping pills.

When we would go on vacation----pills, camping--pills, honeymoon---pills, insomnia---pills! FOR THIRTY YEARS! I have had NO infections now since early 2007 and nothing has changed in the intimacy department. In fact just the freedom alone has increased our frequency! It boggles my mind to think about all the damaging courses of differnt antibiotics that my body has endured. So young or old, if you are dealing with cystitis, and use Unisom, or Compoz, or any of those sleeping pills at the drug store, etc....you may very well have the connection that I do. Just what it is in the sleeping pills that triggers bladder infections I don't know---------but I'm positive they are the culprit!

I have tried Azo, lemon, cranberry, and alka seltzer all as natural remedies for my uti's. Blueberries seem to work best for me. I have had them since childhood and fought one off recently by blueberries and water, water, water.
