Borax and Baking Soda Health Benefits

| Modified on Nov 17, 2023
Borax and Sodium Bicarb Remedy

Two basic natural substances, borax and sodium bicarbonate (also known as baking soda), boast numerous applications and can be combined to create a highly effective treatment for various health problems, including fungal infections, advanced joint degeneration, and fatigue.

In September 2017, a reader* kindly divulged a remedy that a Russian pharmacist had provided years before to address his severely damaged knees. Faced with the prospect of knee surgery, he decided to give this seemingly straightforward solution a try. Fortunately, his decision to test the remedy led to rapid healing and ultimately allowed him to avoid surgery.

How to Prepare a Borax-Baking Soda Solution

Ingredients:

  • ½ teaspoon borax powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • 1 quart of green tea

Instructions:

  1. Combine ½ teaspoon of borax powder and ½ teaspoon of baking soda in 1 quart of green tea.
  2. Stir the mixture well until both the borax and baking soda are fully dissolved.
  3. Consume the entire solution daily for three months, followed by a one-month break.

For chronic issues, long-term use may be necessary. However, for acute problems, the remedy might only be needed for about a week. If you are sensitive to caffeine found in green tea, substitute it with water.

How Does Borax-Baking Soda Solution Work?

Borax and baking soda are used separately to address various health issues, as they contain essential elements crucial for maintaining good health. A wide array of health problems can be resolved by restoring the body's mineral balance.

Borax comprises sodium, boron, oxygen, and hydrogen, while baking soda comprises sodium, hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. Both compounds are alkaline in nature, which is important because many health issues stem from an overly acidic system. By reducing acidity, symptoms can be alleviated.

The pH of borax is 9.3, and that of baking soda is approximately 8.4. Borax is a natural antifungal and antiparasitic agent and is a key component in Ted from Bangkok's well-known mange treatment for pets. Baking soda is frequently used to address digestive problems and to alkalize the body.

Green tea, rich in antioxidants, has been consumed for centuries. It is believed to reduce inflammation and provide benefits to individuals with diabetes and arthritis. Additionally, green tea may have potential cancer-preventative properties. 1

Topical Use of Borax-Baking Soda

Borax and baking soda are used topically for many health concerns. Combining them in a bath or foot bath may be of particular use to those with athlete’s foot, fungal skin problems, heel spurs, or to deliver the remedy to the body for those who do not tolerate new remedies well internally.

½ - 1 cup of baking soda is a common amount to use in a bath. Usually less borax is used in a bath; 2-4 tablespoons per bath.

Cautionary Advice for Using Borax-Baking Soda Solution

Before incorporating new supplements or remedies into your routine, it is highly recommended to consult with a qualified healthcare professional. Success with a remedy for one person does not guarantee that it will work for everyone, as individual circumstances vary. Factors such as diet, medications, current health status, weight, age, gender, and metabolism can influence a remedy's effectiveness.

Ted from Bangkok has suggested a dose of 1/4 teaspoon borax in a liter of water for men and 1/8 teaspoon borax in a liter of water for women. The recipe mentioned earlier, which includes baking soda, requires twice the amount of borax per day, so it is essential to proceed cautiously.

When trying a new remedy, starting with lower amounts than suggested is advisable to minimize the risk of side effects. Gradually increasing the dose makes it easier to find the optimal amount for success rather than reducing the dose to mitigate side effects.

Detox reactions, such as headaches, nausea, diarrhea, and low energy, can occur when starting new remedies. Since borax can eliminate parasites and fungi, the byproducts of this process may cause these side effects.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the borax-baking soda solution has shown the potential to address various health issues, including fungal infections, joint degeneration, and fatigue. However, it is crucial to consult with a qualified healthcare professional before using this remedy, as individual factors can influence its effectiveness. By starting with a lower dose and gradually increasing it, you can find the optimal amount for your specific needs while minimizing the risk of side effects. Always approach new remedies cautiously and stay informed about potential interactions with medications or existing medical conditions. Sharing experiences and learning from others can be invaluable in discovering alternative treatments that may improve overall well-being.

If you have tried the borax-baking soda solution for your health, we would love to hear about your experience! Continue reading below for feedback from Earth

Bladder Pain

Posted by Deborah (Riverview, Fl) on 08/02/2008

For bladder pain please get some Ph paper and test your urine. You want it alkaline, not acidic. Check it all day long. It could be a fungal growth. To kill it and get alkaline take 400mg of potassium citrate 3 times a day. Also take 1/4 tsp. borax, 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. baking soda and 1 to 2 tbls apple cider vinegar in a little water. Take it 3 times a day. You can drink some plain water after it to wash it down. The fungus won't like this and you may feel worse, before you get better, please stick with it and stay away from all sugars. I can now go 2 to 3 hours without going to the bathroom and only get up 3 times at night, it use to be every 20 minutes.

I have been using ACV, Borax and Baking Soda in 1L of water for 2 weeks now. I sip it as recommended all day. I used my remedy for 5 days faithfully and just finishing giving my body 2 days off to cleanse and relax...

The happy miracle, on ONLY day 2 of this remedy, protocol my underarm body oder stopped completely!! (I had to apply deoderant sometimes 2x a day until that time, and the deoderant always failed me!)

I still sweat, though much less, the thing is, my underarm sweat just doesn't have a scent any longer, in fact it smells a little bit sweet and gentle, like smelling a baby! Remember how naturally sweet new babies smell everyday!

I am unsure how this happened, I only know I call it a miracle and feel most grateful and appreciative!

I hope this gives some inspiration to somebody else to give this remedy and 'try'!

Recipe:

  • 2 tsps ACV per L. H20
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda per same above
  • pinch of borax per same above

And, on days when I wake up and my sinuses are congested at all, I add cayenne pepper to my drink in the 1 L. of H20, and that amount is about ~1/8 tsp. It makes the drink spicy and it works quite well!

Peace,
Ronda

I know this is an old post, but I find the fact that your armpits have a sweet smell to them very interesting and wanted to add my experience for the readers.

I too had sweet smelling armpits for a time, and that was after not using soap or deodorant for about two years. I was also vegan (fruits & vegetables is how you get your boron naturally) and only wore cotton.

This super power of mine went away when I went to live with my grandpa. His house was full of black mold and mildew (borax is a powerful anti-fungal), we ate only white bread and meat, and I occasional used his head & shoulders shampoo on my armpits and other essential areas as "insurance" (which apparently removes the skin's protective acid mantle, so it probably did more harm than good). And I later found out that some of my new cotton shirts weren't 100% cotton.

It also took about 2 years of living at my grandpa's for this change to happen.

I noticed that my armpits started to get a very mild sour milk smell to them. Then it went from that to BO, to really, really bad BO.

Using soap and deodorant (I went as natural as I could) seemed to fix it for the most part, but if I really dug my finger into my armpit, it would still have a slight BO smell to it.

After moving to my parent's clean and new apartment and going back to using soap and deodorization, I thought I had it under control. But running late for a Christmas party I forgot to put on deodorant (mom was yelling at me) and decided to wear a nice polyester shirt my dad got me, I smelled later that day, especially after sweating outside. It wasn't a BO smell, but it was funky and people noticed.

Anyway, after that I feel like I finally killed off that bacteria or fungus from my grandpa's after putting rubbing alcohol on my armpits a few times. The first application and that sour smell got really, really strong. Then with the second application there was no smell at all, besides the rubbing alcohol.

(If you have eczema caused by bacteria, rubbing alcohol is also very good in treating it. Just make sure to moisturize after as it is very drying.)

Today, if I now dig my finger in there, I don't get that sour smell or BO anymore, but it is a still muggy smell.

I'm starting to think maybe I got an internal mildew or mold infection at my grandpa's that eventually colonized my skin and armpits (FYI, skin probiotics are often pills you swallow cause that bacteria works its way from your anus to the rest of your skin) as I also had restroom problems while living there (those have also gotten better on their own).

So maybe it was the boron in my vegan diet that caused my sweet smelling armpits.

Whatever it was, I'm excited to start using a little borax to get things back to how it was, maybe some baking soda too.

If I can get that sweet smell again, I'll be very happy.

—

For those of you wondering how I showered back in the day, I basically just used water and the friction of my hand. Just make sure you get all the essentials and plenty of friction.

I read that the Peace Pilgrim also didn't use soap.

And some people here on Earth Clinic can also testify to the power of not using soap when it comes to body odor:

You can not get enough Boron in your diet just eating fruits and vegetables today. That has not been true since man started dumping huge amounts of fertilizer on crops, not rotating crops and not allowing fields to lay fallow every 7 years. Then add in the herbicides and pesticides and no way is it possible. A long time ago like a decade ago, I looked into this so if I get the numbers wrong I apologize. If I recall properly prior to artificial fertilizer the amount of Boron in most produce today is 1/30th of what was in the 1950's and previous. Even looking at the amounts in fruits and vegetables and their leaves from 1973 to today looks like the steepest slide you have ever seen for children! So unless you have 3 stomachs and are eating wild grasses and flowers in unmolested pastures I doubt you can eat enough Vegan approved food and get your Boron needs met. I suppose if you are looking at the insanely low amounts recommended by 1st world nations you might be able to meet it, That said those standards are so low as to keep your teeth from falling out and your bones from bending they are not what is needed for optimal health! It goes without saying that diet will change how you smell to anyone not eating the same diet. The Vietnamese could smell our soldiers mostly because of the dairy that they ate. If you are in a culture that does not eat dairy it is an obvious smell. I could smell Koreans a mile away especially when sweating because of all the garlic, onions and fermented products in all the Kimchee they ate daily. Guys that were eating a lot of protein powder and meat to gain size at the gym their sweat smelled like ammonia! Do not subscribe to a diet until you have tried it and benefited from it or been harmed by it. I have tried many different diets and some of the ones that should have been healthy produced terrible outcomes. Eating vegan is hell on earth for me. Eating a diet high in plant foods that still includes meat, cheese and dairy is fantastic. Just eating meat is almost as bad as Vegan!

After less than one week of taking this solution, my armpit odor is about 50% gone. I still sweat excessively from hot flashes, but the smell is no longer offensive. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Trang,

When I was young (I'm 70 now) and going through hot flashes, a kind neighbor told me to try black cohosh, I got some capsules at the store and took one each morning... I never suffered hot flashes or night sweats again. I hope this works well for you as it did for me.

Borax and Baking Soda Protocol

Posted by Odelia (Singapore) on 05/22/2018

Borax and Baking Soda protocol: To start slow, can I use 1/16 tsp borax & 1/16 baking soda to 1 litre of water so to keep to 1/8 tsp solution? Take it with meal or after meal once a day & increase to twice a day for 2 week?

For health maintenance, can you take this forever to do a daily detox from fluoride?

You can certainly take a lower dose of borax per day if you wish. But please remember that borax has the same MSDS toxicity profile as common table salt -- so its pretty safe. You must also be sure to take the borax protocol (1/8 tspn in a liter of water per day for women) on a 4-days-on-3-days-off protocol. The reason for doing this is that borax does increase production the sex hormones somewhat. So the days off are needed to help avoid over-stressing sex hormone production.

The protocol that is properly recommended by Ted from Bangkok is shown here:

Hi Odelia...I forgot to answer all your question, with apologies.

To put your mind more at ease with the Borax and Sodium Bicarbonate protocols, I've used both these protocols on their own and mixed together (as Ted from Bangkok recommends) with no problems whatsoever. I've also been using both these protocols regularly since 2007 and I continue to use them now. I regard both these protocols as primary disease preventatives and necessary for health. I'm now aged 68 and there is nothing wrong with me - my heart is good, I have no disease and I haven't been to the doctor for any illness since 1990.

Just bought a new dishwasher and thought I'd look up some DIY dishwasher detergent recipes and lo and behold! Equal parts Borax and baking soda is one of the recipes! So, you KNOW what I'm thinking - that the tiny amount of residual borax on the dishes should satisfy the body's boron requirements! ROFL! Plus, if it turns out to be too much borax you can add a little citric acid to make it rinse better and/or to counteract whatever residue might be left behind.

I love to use borax for cleaning. I would imagine it would be good for cleaning an aircon. I don't use ac but if I did I am sure I would clean it with borax especially if it smelled moldy.

I find that my skin seems a little sensitive to borax. I did use it with baking soda to wash my hair. I hate using shampoo and have been using baking soda for a couple of years. Mixing borax in with it seemed to make my hair feel really clean and fresh. No more flaking. I think shampoo makes my scalp flake and it is really hard to rinse out of my very thick very long hair.

I put all kinds of oils in my hair my it never looks greasy. I routinely use olive, sesame, coconut oils and, cedar, lavender, eucalyptis ect...essential oil. I work out side in my yard a lot I find essential oil in my hair neck and wrist helps repel insects. I hear insects don't do too well around borax either. Now that gardening season is ramping up a bit washing my hair with borax may be of help.

I made a mix of 1/8 tsp each of borax and baking soda in one gallon of water I brush my teeth with it along with H2O2 spray on my tooth brush. I might try it in my water pick as well. This really makes my teeth and gums feel much stronger. My breath stays fresher longer than using tooth paste.

I drink a small amount of my gallon mix a few times per week. I am a small person and also I am very sensitive to any kind of change in my system. So I make my mixture much more dilute than the recommended recipe. I drink one small juice glass in morning only. I do feel more energy the first time I took it was at night and I did not want to sleep. I drank some in the morning next day and was up and about all day even though it was chilly outside.

I do believe I have had a few detox symptoms not bad ones (another reason I take a small amount). I don't want to have a major blow out. I know I have not been eating right this winter so I know I have some build up of toxic stuff in my body. I have spent a good portion of my 65 years focused on staying in good health on all levels and I know I am much more aware of my body than most people are today. I can't believe how people turn their health over to the medical industrial complex. IMO their only saving grace is their ability to treat trauma cases. At any rate I am glad to see others taking charge of their own health. What you spend on your good health is less than half what you would spend on your bad health. Keep that in mind the next time you think about your body. Get to know your body it is your friend. Thanks for reading this.

After reading alot about Borax, I decided to give it a try for the inflammation in my body, I started with a pinch of Borax, baking soda and celtic sea salt and the first thing I noticed is that within 24 hours my urgent incontinence went away. I slept through the whole night without waking to pee once and when I got up, I didn't feel like it was a race to get to the bathroom before peeing myself. It was that way all day and the first day in years that I could get to the bathroom without panic. And the inflammation….yes its helping that to. Day two I woke up and could actually feel muscle definition in my legs and my belly felt flat. This stuff is crazy!

Hi Laurie,

I have similar problems and I am at wits end with the pain and the constant peeing. I have just recently seen this protocol but there was no mention of how much water to use or when to take it. I have tried so many things and nothing seems to work. Could you enlighten me please on the amount of water used and when to take it. I am assuming morning, but before breakfast or after? I drink lemon water before I eat - could I put the borax etc in that do you think? Any help would be appreciated.

With the issue of ringworm, I dosed my two dogs and my son with one of Ted's solutions and had my son sit in the "dip" for 30 minutes just like the dogs. He has ringworm and the dogs have a bacterial infection. I'm still working on the dogs, but the solution I used worked immediately on the ringworm. That solution was a 50/50 ratio of Borax and Baking Soda made into a paste using 1 part 3% Hydrogen Peroxide and 2 parts water.

The article states, "Borax and baking soda are each alkaline. Many health problems are caused by an overly acidic system. Reducing acidity will often reduce symptoms." While I agree with this, does Borax actually help to alkalize the body since when ingested, it reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach and forms boric acid and sodium chloride? Thanks for any answers.

I've been suffering with menopause hot flashes day & night. I've tried almost all the menopause supplements in my local health food store. It has been a very expensive experience with minimal relief. I came across an article referring to Borax, Celtic salt & baking soda for balancing hormones & helping hot flashes. I took my last supplement tablet of Estrovera & switched the next day to a very small pinch of each 20mule borax, Celtic salt & baking soda. Mixed it in a glass of water and went on with my day. I have experienced no hot flashes day or night now for 10 days. I'm able to “not” dress in layers. My shoulder pain has also stopped and lower back is not as sore from gardening. Many ppl & articles say not to consume Borax but honestly, it's the only thing that has “really” helped. I'm not one for synthetic prescriptions like HRT which can also be bad for us.

I'm going to continue on this “pinch a day” of these 3 ingredients as it has been affordable and helpful. And, I haven't had any side effects. Hopefully, it'll continue to help.

As an ex runner I was told my knees were shot and needed replacing. At the time I was working in Russia and a local pharmacist advised to try this before knee surgery. Mix one box of baking soda with an equal amount of Borax. Blend and use 1 teaspoon in a quart of green tea and drink the whole thing every day. I was on a 3 month rotation, 1 off 3 on. At the end of 3 months my knees felt fine. I went home and had both x-rayed. Bone had returned to normal, cartilage was no longer stretched like an old rubber band and most importantly my Synovial fluid had gone from gone / gone to normal. In Russia Borax is widely used. Hi Adrienne (New Zealand) and Nikola (Zadar) -

A. Jackson (North Dakota/Singapore) wrote that on 09/11/2017 so may not respond.

However, my interpretation of that post is just take equal amounts (by weight - it's more accurate) of borax and baking soda.

For instance, use a kitchen scale and measure out 100 g of borax and then 100 g of baking soda (or whatever amount you want to use - just make sure it is an equal amount).

Mix the two thoroughly. Best way to do this is put both in a container with a lid and give it a good shake.

A. Jackson then took 1 teaspoon of this mixture and added it to 1 quart of green tea and drank it daily for three months and then stopped for one month. Jackson said it was a 3 months on and 1 month off rotation.

I think this is what he was trying to convey. Jackson certainly had an outstanding result.

Cheers, Tessa

I take baking soda and borax as well in the hope of helping my joints. I also have my Dad and Mom doing it as well. I do have question though. What had you tried before this? You hear all kinds of testimonials but without knowing what you tried that failed prior it is hard to gauge how effective it was. If you did not try a more conventional treatment that failed prior to this then the fact that it worked for you could me close to placebo if you know what I mean. It is not specific to you either almost no one on this site ever mentions what they tried before that failed to bring either relief, cure or improvement.

An example if someone said " I tried medically supervised physical therapy, ultra sound, Electro-stim, NSAID's and Vicodin for my knee pain and nothing helped until I tried Baking Soda and Borax! " that would be crazy incredible. On the other hand if all they tried before was taking a few over the counter Tylenol with no effect well the testimonial about how great the unconventional natural treatment worked suddenly has a lot less weight.

Same thing for ringworm if no conventional pharmaceutical was tried then well you really can not compare the natural treatment with any kind of weight behind it. For the record I have tried all of those things and have had surgery on my right knee and ankle.

I am trying to put off any more serious surgeries especially knee replacement surgery! So again not just about your post but 99% of the post's here. Some history would be nice is all! Cheer's! -John

Yes, having some history of what people did beforehand may be nice, however, that isn't what this site is about.

Most people coming here have already tried the "supervised medical treatments" before natural treatments.

That's why we've turned to what's natural instead of pharmakeia, which literally means sorcery, or witchcraft.

The whole point of pharmaceuticals and drugs in general is to make you dependant on them - whereas on the other hand, the point of natural medicine is to make you non-reliant on it.

Pharmaceuticals are designed to treat symptoms, not heal.

So gauging natural medicine against pharmaceuticals is really nonsense.

Martha

I would also add, that most pharmaceuticals have side effects; some serious. And pain killers don't fix the problem... It seems to me that fixing the problem is what is most desired so we don't have to go through life dependent on taking drugs in order to function somewhat. Also, if the recommended solution is a joint replacement, who wants that if there is a way to help the joint. I went through two hip replacements. It was terribly difficult. If I had known of this protocol back then I would have jumped on it right away. Now I am faced with cartilage loss in both knees, so am definitely going to try this remedy and pray that it keeps me strong. I will repost results in a few months.

He has treated my husbands sciatica with PRP and restored both rotator cuffs with adipose and vascular stem cells and PRP, using only our blood and marrow(when needed)for injections. There is still plenty of cartilage in your joints to restore them. Borax has been used to treat arthritis for years and sodium bicarbonate will help keep your body more alkaline. An acidic body sets the stage for disease.

Wow, what a post from A. Jackson! Thank you for sharing! I made up a batch of borax and baking soda yesterday after reading his amazing post. I put 1/2 cup borax powder and 1/2 cup baking soda in a ziplock bag and shook it vigorously. I then added 1/2 teaspoon to a 1 liter bottle of filtered water and drank it throughout the day (didn't have any green tea). Gotta say, I've used borax over the years, but adding baking soda is amazing! I have been fighting a sinus infection from suspected mold exposure from a leaking a/c unit since last Saturday and not having much luck with my neti pot and various remedies. However, I'd say about 2 hours after drinking this concoction, my sinus infection started to clear up and I had a huge surge of energy.

Today, drinking another batch - 1/4 teaspoon from my ziplock bag in a liter of water. I drank about 1/2 cup from my bottle first thing this morning on an empty stomach and now I'm sipping it throughout the day. Felt slightly nauseous for about 10 minutes drinking it on an empty stomach, so I won't do that tomorrow morning!

Will let you all know if there are any side effects and how it goes.

Hi Deirdre...All I can say is snap!! I've also had a similar sinus problem over the last few weeks due to aircon. As you know, I've recently moved house to the provinces of Cebu. I've moved into a studio apartment in a small town that has a very old aircon which hasn't been cleaned in a donkey's age. This problem was in just one nasal passage only. It felt like it was becoming infected. My nose was very sore on one side and this was also affecting my vision. It was also affecting my sleep.

I developed nasal soreness externally and internally due, particularly, to the excessive drying effect of the aircon on the air in the apartment. My nose is very sensitive to this. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of my rather large stores of herbs, remedies etc before I moved(including my beloved borax). What I did was to just buy some 3% hydrogen peroxide from the local pharmacy and use a dropper to squirt the hydrogen peroxide (at 1.5%) up the nasal passage that had the problem. I've done this twice a day for two days and I'm happy to report that the soreness has greatly reduced and is hardly noticeable now. My vision and sleep are now also much improved.

Several years ago several people died in a major outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease (a type of pneumonia) in the UK. The cause of the infection was tracked to the large aircons that are used for tall buildings. The heat produced within these aircon units was the perfect breeding ground pathogen's like the Legionella bacteria.

To avoid this problem occurring again(it's happened before with me) I am going to get the aircon cleaned ASP. I will also be giving special instructions to the person cleaning the aircon -- I will formulate a mix consisting of hydrogen peroxide mixed with sodium bicarbonate and get the aircon man to wash the aircon down with this mix in order to kill all fungus and all other pathogens inside the aircon. I will also wash the aircon air filter in this mix. Doing this should prevent harmful fungal spores/bacteria from being picked up by the aircon and sprayed into our apartment.

Later, due to my nose sensitivity to dry air, I might also buy a humidifier to run at the same time as my aircon to help preserve the moisture in the air when I sleep.

Any time I get any nasal congestion I use colloidal silver spray in a bottle I made..In a day or 2 it's gone..I spray it into my nose about 3 times a day..Good luck..

Hi Bill,

Sorry, I was out of town last week and didn't get a chance to respond to your post. Thank you for the tips. I am very glad your sinus issues and vision improved with peroxide! I haven't ever tried a 1.5% peroxide squirt for sinus issues. I usually do 1 teaspoon of sea salt and 1/8 teaspoon of 3% peroxide in a neti pot.

Yep, I was also thinking of Legionnaire's Disease when I was cleaning up the black water on my carpet from the a/c unit! I pulled up about 1/2 gallon of black water from the carpet using my carpet cleaner. I will have the a/c unit cleaned asap or see if I can do it myself. It's one of those large portable units on wheels. I still wake up with a minor sinus reaction even though I have not been running the a/c unit for days now. I did spray down the carpet and bed cover with the borax and peroxide solution that Art from CA mentioned recently. Thankfully, the peroxide did not lighten my light gray carpet, at least not that I can see. But I only misted the surface.

On the subject of the borax and peroxide remedy - yesterday was day 5. I'm going to take a break for two days as Ted always recommended. I added it to a 1 liter thermos of hot Matcha green tea. Tastes great!

Tip: Matcha powder is expensive, but I found Matcha powder in the superfoods section at Sprouts that was very reasonably priced for the quantity you get.

You can put borax in your sinus wash. It is gentle enough to cure pink eye and I've been using it in my sinus spray for months and it's healed an ongoing sinus issue I have had for years. Borax Rules!

Thanks for the tip on using Borax to cure eye infections and sinus problems! I didn't realize Borax could be used this way!
