Natural Cures for Bad Breath and Halitosis

| Modified on Nov 19, 2023

If you suffer with bad breath day in and day out, rest assured that you are not the only one. Stale breath is a condition that has inundated humankind for centuries, and it often still seems to elude us. However, we have come up with a list of natural cure options to help you overcome your bad breath woes and be on your way to fresher breath. We suggest trying hydrogen peroxide, apple cider vinegar, and activated charcoal first.

What Is Halitosis?

Halitosis can be defined very simply as bad breath. However, the issue itself isn’t quite that simple. Bad breath can be an embarrassing condition that even causes individuals anxiety.

In any case, bad breath is a condition that involves mouth odor caused by a variety of different sources. Some individuals experience the condition as a stale smell while other have more of a foul odor. Certain types of mouth odors may be indicators of more serious conditions.

What Causes Bad Breath?

Generally speaking, bad breath is caused by issues in the mouth. Bad breath can be caused by leftover food particles in the mouth, tobacco products, poor dental hygiene, dry mouth, or infections in your mouth. Some issues have roots that lie outside the mouth, though. Mouth, nose, and throat conditions, such as a postnasal drip, may also cause foul-smelling breath. Additionally, certain medication and even certain diseases, like cancer and metabolic disorders, also contribute to breath odor.

Can’t I Just Brush My Teeth?

If you determine that you have bad breath, then one of your first lines of defense is to review your oral hygiene practices. Making changes, such as brushing your teeth more often and drinking plenty of water, are great places to begin with treatment. Additionally, you’ll want to be sure to brush your tongue any time you brush your teeth, as it often harbors excess bacteria. Also be sure to floss daily to eradicate any bacteria hiding in between your teeth.

Do Natural Remedies Work to Freshen Breath?

In addition to amping up your regular hygiene practices, you can also try specific natural treatments to help freshen your breath. Options such as hydrogen peroxide, apple cider vinegar, and activated charcoal help eliminate excess bacteria in your mouth and help to naturally relieve issues of bad breath. If your condition still persists despite changes in your oral hygiene habits as well as these treatment options, you should see a dentist to determine if you have a more serious condition.

1. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful disinfectant composed of hydrogen and oxygen. Using hydrogen peroxide as an oral mouth rinse helps eliminate existing odor-causing bacteria.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains important digestive enzymes. Supplementing with ACV will help you improve your digestive processes and can alleviate bad breath issues.

3. Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is one of world’s oldest and most trusted detoxifying remedies. When used as a paste to brush the teeth, the charcoal absorbs poisons from your body and helps improve intestinal and digestive health to reduce breath odor.

Bad breath has a variety of causes and can be treated using a variety of remedies. Give one of our suggestions a try or add one of your own to our extensive list of reader-contributed remedies for bad breath below!

I have a 13yr old daughter and she has had chronic bad breath since age 4. I have tried all types of home remedies, most recently a tea tree oil, peppermint oil & baking soda rinse. It masked the odor for about an hour. We have gone through tons of gum & breath mints. I came across this site a few weeks back, bought the acidophilus and I have not smelt any odor.... Thank goodness!!! She is soooo excited!!!

Hello, I m suffering from halitosis since I was kid now I am 28years old. I have been in very bad mood, crying dont want to go to work because my colleagues are teasing me and hummiliate me to others!! I ve heard phrases such as I hate you, smelly dimitra...etc! When I was a teenager no one told me anything for that, in college I started noticing people rubbing their nose and look the other way when I talked.i thought that I should brush my teeth more thorougly.i asked my mother one day and said to me that since I was a kid and in college my breath smelled! She didn't warn me once!! I was so ashamed!!! If she did maybe I wouldnt be in this situation now! The last couple of months I have read everything about halitosis, from tonsil stones till tongue scrapers, apple cider vinegar, warm water with soda and salt....and the list goes on!!! I ve tried everything!! I gargled with avc soda and water chlorexidine 0,2%. I use toothpaste that doesnt contain sodium lauryl sulfate, I floss every day twice a day, after a while 1-2hours bad breath is coming back.

I read your answers and saw that may people talked about probiotics and that some people dont have so much good bacteria and bad bacteria are more in their body. I said to my husband I ll take probiotics, so I bought ACIDOPHILUS 4BILLION. From the first day my taste was better.. my bad breath comes from the tongue when I licked my wrist it was smelly! Now NOTHING!! I take 2-3pills per day.its not a medicine its vegan and doesnt contain dairy. It helps with digestion and balances the bacteria in your body, I m going to the bathroom everyday! I watch my diet very much cause when I eat to much or drink alcohol more than two glasses of wine bad breath comes back, I lick my wrist and I know it. I take one pill after a while its gone. So I eat less every three hours, I have more healthy diet, I eat fruits and vegetables, I eat yogurt and kefir that contains probiotic. I did believe that my bad breath was coming from my mouth but I went to see a dentist and said that its not from my mouth. also check very good your tonsils for tonsil stone I found a crypt with a tonsil stone and now I clean it everyday With clorexidine with a q tip.My bad breath comes from bad bacteria in my body!! So the solution for me is ACIDOPHILUS. I ll try 8billion now. I m doing this 20days now I asked both my parents and my husband and said not bad breath anymore, I went to my job from the first time without chewing a gum! I'm feeling much better now! Also my mother told me that when someone is rubbing his nose doesn't seem that your breath smells.

I hope I helped! Don't be ashamed!! People say bad things because they know nothing!!! They think that your not watching your hygiene! Well prove them wrong!! Try probiotics!

Hi sorry for my late answer. I use acidophilus and bifidus 8 billion from now foods, but the first three months I used acidophilus 4 billion plus from health aid. I liked more from health aid maybe I stick to that. My tongue is pinker now and I clean it everyday with Ora brush. I have a tonsil that has a crypt, when I eat junk food or cheese the next day has a little tonsil stone. I check it everyday, twice day when I brush and clean it with a q-tip. I believe the very bad breath was from that. I am calm now with this problem! Don't panic, you'll find the answer to your problem, the best thing you can do, TALK to your parents, siblings, boyfriend, girlfriend, the person you are close to. I hope I helped!

YAHOO! BRAVO! I've had bad breath for the last 20 years. My teeth and gums are OK... It didn't dawn on me that it could be my stomach?

I'm a green juicer and maybe that was causing my bad breath. Oil pulling helps a bit, but, not enough. So, last week I went to the health store and bought Acidophilus (3 billion) and within 20 minutes my bad breath was gone.... I take two daily.

Usually when I get up in the morning I have bad breath... Not anymore!!!! I'm over the moon happy. I still brush with baking soda and swish with organic coconut oils... But, I finally solved my issue!

I haven't had bad breath since buy acidophilus. I wish I had know years ago. I also foundout that diary and sugar gives you bad breath.

Thank you! Love

I just started taking a strong form of Acidophilus from that I got from a Holistic Health & Nutrition advisor. She told me my symptoms sounded like I had been infected with Candida throughout my body. So I researched and came across people who had extremely bad breath from a Candida overgrowth in their esophagus. An endoscopy showed white patches all over their esophagus! I went to an ENT and he offered to schedule an endoscopy to verify (he openly doubted it was Candida) and urged me to continue the probiotic because he was shocked it was alleviating some of my IBS symptoms so quickly.

I am taking 4 pills a day instead of the two because I have such terrible IBS symptoms- constipation, bloating, indigestion, gas, stomach pains, occasional cramping and the horrible bad breath. The symptoms aren't totally gone but it's so much better than before! I no longer have an awful taste in my mouth. The white coating isn't on my tongue. My morning breath is tolerable.

Side note- I've tried several different natural methods without a long-lasting result. Oil pulling with different oils, cayenne pepper in warm water, hot water with lemon, chorella, Zinc, high dosages of Vitamin C, peppermint capsules, etc. These methods weren't working for me because they don't kill Candida.

Can acidophilus be used for an 11 year old? My daughter has terrible breath. She also has stinky feet when she wears tennis shoes and socks all day, but there is no peeling or itching like athletes foot. She also has a plantars wart on her foot near her big toe and the one next to it. We had a doctor 'remove' it with the cautery method 2 and half years ago. It seemed to have gone away for awhile, but now it's getting larger and isn't reacting to salicyc acid. I found this site last night searching about the banana peel method, so we are going to try that. I was just wondering if there is something internal like a virus that is causing the bad breath, stinky feet, and wart susceptibility? Any suggestions would be great.

For the plantar's wart, there are two different methods you can try (look them up on YouTube, it's easy):

1) apply a strip of duct tape to cover the wart (Mercola wrote about this recently), and leave it on. Change it every day or two.

or

2) make a little paste of baking soda and castor oil; rub it into the wart and then cover the wart with a Bandaid. Change 2x/day.

I did a combo of both methods and my wart was gone in less than 2 weeks!

Could be a vit B deficiency? Start with 1/2 TBS. of BSM (Blackstrap Molasses) in some milk or water before going to bed. That contains all the B vitamins and they must be taken together to prevent a deficiency in any of them.

CANDIDA OVERGROWTH IS THE CAUSE!

You have to kill the candida first and then take the probiotics. Candida is hard to kill and you need something very strong like Black walnut hull tincture. I followed many of the remedies here to alleviate candida and white tongue and nothing worked until I did a serious bowel/candida cleanse as follow:

Dr. Clark Clark Bowel Cleanse + Oregano oil

Duration: 25 days

Breakfast:

Black walnut hull tincture (20 min before breakfast)

Drink a cup of hot water before breakfast

Take 3 caps of turmeric (500mg)

Take 3 caps fennel (450mg)

1 caps of digestive enzymes

Take 2 caps of betaine (350mg)

Take 1 cap of Cascara sagrada (350mg)

1 empty cap with 5 drops of oregano oil.

Lunch:

Take 3 caps of turmeric (500mg)

Take 3 caps fennel (450mg)

1 cap of digestive enzymes

Take 2 caps of betaine (350mg)

1 cap of magnesium oxide

Dinner:

Take 3 caps of turmeric (500mg)

Take 3 caps fennel (450mg)

1 cap of digestive enzymes

Take 2 caps of betaine (350mg)

1 cap of magnesium oxide

1 empty cap with 5 drops of oregano oil.

Between Meals

Lugols iodine: 6 drops, 4 times a day in glass of water

Doses:

BWH tincture: day 1 to 5: 1 tbsp every day in COLD water

Days 8,12,16,20 and 24: 3 tbsp everyday in COLD water

This bowel cleanse is very effective because uses anti-parasitic, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal agents. Candida works in conjunction with parasites and bacteria.

After this cleanse then you need to take a strong probiotic formula to make sure your intestinal flora and fauna is balanced. (find an 8 strand formula of at least 10 billion).

Hope this helps! It helped me a lot.

Thank you for the testimonies posted on your site about charcoal curing bad breath. It worked for me & my daughter.
And the depression is over because of bad breath especially after taking in sweet things eg. Juice/ sweets or even food.

It's a miracle come true after many years of trying all manner of mouth wash.

I bought a tin of charcoal from the market, crushed a few pieces into powder then add a glass of water then sieved & drunk thrice A day for two days.

The bad breath emitting from my saliva & digestive system was over.
I thank God for you.

Let others know charcoal is an instant miracle for BB.

Indeed God has provided everything we need on earth ...Glory to God we are healed & will continue taking a glass per week.

Dear Mauri,

The only charcoal that should be used internally or topically is activated charcoal. It may be powdered or in capsules or tables.

The charcoal used for cooking usually contains other chemicals.

If charcoal didn't work for bad breath, perhaps try liquid chlorophyll?

21 yr olds can be picky about what they will try . He might like some popcorn 1/4 cup popped in 1 TBSP coconut oil .Cold pressed is best, I buy large tub at costco, sprinkle sea salt on it and serve with some lemon water.

Activated charcoal would be used at bedtime 2-4 capsules with at least 16 ounces of water . Sleep like a baby. Vinegar is not tasty but you could use capful to cup of water with bit of honey drink through a straw, I"m having it for daily breakfast, YUCK. At bedtime brush teeth gently with small amount of baking soda, very gently...then make a paste of 1/4 tsp each of ~baking soda and coconut oil and apply to teeth and swallow whatever comes off but leave on overnight .

Small bowl of kefir 1/4 cup with a 1/4 cup of fruit to sweeten should reestablish his gut flora after using the charcoal at bedtime.

A bath with some epsom salt (magnesium ) might help him detox his body a bit . Even a foot soak with the salt would work. Loosens up the bowels and helps body with mineral balance.

My questions:

  1. How many times a day should I give the A.charcoal?
  2. What dosage?

  5. Is the cure from Bad breath permanent?

Dear Priya,

Some people use activated charcoal daily for years. The two biggest concerns would be constipation (always take with plenty of water) and the removal of probiotics from the gut (not sure if this actually happens, but caution should be taken by eating yogurt or probiotic foods daily.)

The 1 teaspoon a day you have been giving sounds reasonable if it seems to suit him.

If the cause of bad breath is not addressed this will not be a permanent cure. If a poor diet is the cause, that would need to be addressed for the cure to be permanent.

One of my sons once had a chronic onion smell for no reason we could tell. I gave him bentonite clay internally for a while and it cleared it up and it did not return. I never knew the cause; it was not from eating onions. He was only 9 or so at the time.

I hope he listens well to you and that you both see results soon!

I have had Bad Breath for years but did a good job masking it and like many I tired many things that did not work. Finally I researched the internet and found activated charcoal and gave it a try and I notice a difference the 1st day. In the morning my breath is not is bad and during the morning to lunch period it's not horrible like it used to be. What really got me thinking in the activated charcoal is that a year ago I had a sewer vent pipe that would give out a terrible smell. I fixed the smell by installing a carbon filter which basically traps the toxins like the activated charcoal. Knowing this and knowing that my BB was from the inside I tried the AC and its working great. I think many people concentrate on the mouth when in reality its coming from the inside. I will try the hydrogen peroxide as well but AC is been great!

I once read a home remedy book for different diseases such as BB, and it says there that an ordinary charcoal used for grilling foods can be used. Just powderized it and mix it in a glass of water and then drink it... Or buy empty capsules from a drugstore, pour the powderized charcoal in it then drink it w/ a glass of water... after reading about the HP & BS, I guess I'll try those...

I wanted to chime in regarding using regular charcoal for ingestion.... IMO you would be taking serious risks by putting this in your system. Activated is charcol is readily available and cost effective so why would you even consider such craziness. I'm sure the grilling charcol is loaded with toxins and adjunts that I personally would not suggest ingesting on any level.

Hi, I have been suffering chronic BB for 5 years to the extent that I resigned from my job and lost an opportunity to work abroad. I have suffered so much humilation and people will almost laugh at me everytime they smelled my stinking breath. I was diagnosed with ulcer, hiatal hernia, gastritis, esophagitis, and doudenitis. I've been taking prescriptions but my bb is still there. I went to ENT to have my throat and nose examined and the doctor found out that I have tonsil stones that smelled like "poo". I was able to remove it and cleanse my tonsils after brushing and rub with a mixture of salt, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. I tried so many remidies like brushing, flossing, oil pulling, liquid chlorophyll, gargling with 50% water and 50% hydrogen peroxide after meals, but my breath would still stink. I have seek an alternative medicine and the doctor told me that I have to cleanse my system with fruits and vegetables especially "raw and green" to detoxify my body. Strickly no meat, white breads, pasta, sweets, fried foods, soda, and dairy foods. He advised me to drink organic, green vegetable smoothie with fruits everyday especially in the morning on an empty stomach. I also take "activated charcoal capsules" in a glass of warm water 4 times a day, 2 hours before meal. And I noticed my breath has improved and I can talk to people face to face. Thanks to the wonders of nature "green veges and fruits", "activated charcoal" (please google search activated charcoal for more info) and, "internet" for the priceless information. God is good all the time. Cheers! :)

Activated Charcoal, Eliminating Grains

Bad Breath:

I have tried hydrogen peroxide, acidophilus and liquid chlorophyll. But none had the immediate effects that the activated charcoal had along with eliminating grains (accept flaxseed) from my diet.

I take 3 capsules a 2-3 hours before bed with a large glass of water.

One day, I was grocery shopping and was hungry so I decided to buy my favorite sushi at the sushi bar. I ate it then went to work and my breath smelled bad. I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth, then tried to mask the odor with mint gum but it did not help. I realized then that the rice in the sushi was most likely the cause and eliminated rice from my diet.

It's been about a month now any my breath is much improved. I am thankful for the sushi incident because it pinpointed the rice as one of the causes for the bad breath. When I went back grocery shopping, I bought smoke salmon and ate it without any strong after affects.

I am blood type o + and my current diet consists of vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, fruit and flaxseed, which some might consider Paleo. I have eliminated dairy, wheat, and grains, (accept flaxseed). I hope that this information benefits someone.

I got rid of white coating at the back of the tongue, I made three changes first off I started drinking lemon water approximately 1 lemon a day I wound have half in the morning half at night. Next I started taking chlorophyll tablets, just one per day. Then one day I decided to gargle some strong vodka for around three minutes it burnt alot but after I brushed that day I didn't have anymore white coating and I didn't have to do it again as it did not come back again. Thanks to that and I guess the chlorophyll my breath has been fresh.

Hi Flori, did you have the bad smells coming out of your nose is why you started the change or was it just the white coating of the tongue? What vodka did you use? How long have you made this change to know it is not temporary? When I say temporary I mean like a couple of hours, if it last the whole day and then some then that would be great. Please let me know. Thanks.

I suffered with bad breath for years. I would pray to God to help me. Family and co-workers would turn the heads or put their hands up to cover their nose. God brought ACV into my life. I discovered my lungs over producing mucous which caused bacteria to grow in the back of my throat and cause BB.

Taking one tsp of ACV, one tsp of water, one tsp of Raw unfiltered honey mix well and drink, Two times a day am and pm take on a empty stomach. Make sure you rinse your mouth thoroughly. Now I am spitting up mucus. No more BB. Glory to GOD. Please share with others, the isolation was brutal.

I just discovered how Apple Cider vinegar can 100% improve bad breath and cure halitosis! I tried everything first! I brushed with baking soda, I gargled with peroxide multiple times a day, I bought tongue brushers. I had used a string of products. I used top grade essential oils. I brushed my teeth 4 times a day. I even own an electric toothbrush!

Nothing worked for three years of searching, perpxide helped but didn't cure it. Essential therapeutic grade peppermint helps but doesn't cure it! I needed a cure!!!

I read an article and gave organic Apple Cider a try. Nothing works like Of the Mother Apple Cider Vinegar!! Wow! Here is what I did and what happened.

So I started of with two teaspoons of A.C. mixed with 3 to 4 oz of water and I would drink it every morning. Then in the evening I would drink one teaspoon mixed with 2 oz of water.

My breath immediately started to improve and after 6 days I don't even have morning breath anymore! Ok, so I was on this for two weeks and decided wow, my breath is amazing, what happens if I stop? ..My breath was still fairly good for three days after I stopped but then started to get bad, and on the last day, day 5, I couldn't take it and started back on my routine.

I am up to a tablespoon in the morning and a teaspoon at night. I mix both with at least a few ounces of water. (Please vary this to find what works for you) I have been on it again for a whole week, this morning I woke up thirsty, but I had FRESH BREATH! I mean like .02% of an order but a mild barely there because of dry mouth is normal. I just did my teaspoon of A.C.V. and brushed my teeth. I am so amazed!

I am sure to buy this and do this routine for the rest of my life. Good thing is any grocery store sells this!

I don't even need my tongue cleaners anymore. I heard this stuff was good but, I had to try it for myself. Also, it is not acidic on the stomach like some may worry about, it seams to neutralize the acid from coffee and helps me with heartburn.

This is a no joke cure! I'm a regular female that suffered from halitosis and now it is gone! Now, I only now brush my teeth in the morning and before bed.
