Hi I wanted to say thanks for this suggestion. I have recently started having attacks and found out I have gall bladder sludge. I checked out this site and found the lavender oil to be something I could both afford and consume without gagging. I am amazed!! It really has cut the attacks and pain down to almost nothing!! I put a drop in a large glass of water and just sip it all the time!! An extra benefit has been the freshest breath of all time! Thanks again for a great idea :)

To EJ from Middleborro, Ma (12/23/09) something that helped me lessen the pain of a gallbladder attack was to put 1 tbsp of flax seed in a pan w/ 2-1/2 c,of water and boil for 5 minutes. Then pour the top off(containing flax seed oil) and sip. I added a little cinnamon and truvia to taste. It really helped! Also, check out gallbladderattack.com for further info on diet changes. You don't need to grind the flax seed to get the oil out, just boil it for tea, or put a tbsp. of flax seed with a cup of water in a clear jar in the fridge and by morning the water(pure water) will have leached out the oil and will be ready to use( not for cooking). can be used on food as an addition(oatmeal salads, etc.) as a source of omega-3 fatty acids (as there is in fish). gallbladderattack.com has alot of good info for sufferers. they might be able to help you identify triggers as, they can be different from person to person. I felt like I was having a heart attack with mine. don't give up on a naturopath. Google your area and find another one. You may have just gotten one with an attitude (just what you need when you are sick huh.) I hope this helps. Many Blessings.

Celery and Mint Leaves, Lemon Juice

For gallbladder attacks, or when you feel it coming, boil water and in a 250ml cup add fresh celery leaves, mint leaves and 1/2 lemon juice and drink it gradually. This may cut down the pain from regularly 3 hours to 1 hour. I have been scheduled for surgery in August and had been using this as backup.

Sunflower Lecithin powder works great. I use a personal blender to combine it into a hot herbal tea 2X daily (1 Tbsp ea). Granules blend easier but are challenging to find. I would buy a bag at my local health store but then I moved and need to find a new source. Back to the powder.

I am happy to hear about it. A gall bladder needs a lot of bicarbonates during digestion and they are one of the important components. If bicarbs are lacking, a gall bladder problem is possible. The vitamin c content neutralizes excess oxidation, and reduces the pain by both antioxidation and excess acidity which causes gallbladder pain.

Chronic gallbladder pain: I took 2 tablespoons of VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) and within 2 weeks felt much better. It also helped me in my bowel movements. I used to very irregular. Now its every day! VCO that has been extracted using a cold press method.

At the first sign of a gall bladder attack/Biliary Colic, I run for the orange juice or an orange. Every cholestoral Rx I've been prescribed, so far, causes my attacks!

Aloe Vera Juice
Posted by Eleana (Sweden) on 03/22/2021

Aloe juice - how do you make it? If you take the inner fillet - that's a thick substance. Do you add water to it?

4 oz that would be 1.1 litre - that's a lot.

Not stones, Gary, or pain. Polyps seen on an ultrasound.

I just had my gallbladder removed in emergency surgery, and told to be on a low fat diet. I want to do well, but I know we need some good fats, and heard bad things about low fat diets. Any help and suggestions would be very appreciated.

Gallbladder Attack:

What makes my pain go away is orange juice. Within 10 to 15 seconds, yes seconds, my pain is gone. The nurse at Kaiser was amazed how it made the pain go away. That's after being doubled over in pain. Blew the doctor away too.

Hi all just thought I would share this with u... I have been suffering with gallbladder attacks for around 3 months now (since having a baby). The pain has been so bad I have been to A+E 3times out of 4. The 1st 2 times they couldnt find what was wrong - but finaly seen another 2doctors about it and they said it is my gallbladder! Anyway... He told me to go on a 0% fat diet and has prescribed me with Buscopan. Buscopan is mylife savour.... Basicly the doctor explained that GB attacks are like have painfull cramping (contractions) ext.... and what Buscopan does it stops your GB from doing this. I would definitely recommend it... I also am very weary of what I eat now as I paranoid I am going to have an attack at any time! Knowing mine last around 24hours + and unbearable, At the moment I am waiting for a letter for a scan on my organs... And if it is 100% my GB which they say it is atm I will be having my gb removed... sooo I would keep going back to ur gp if your still suffering.

Ps I have been told that things like dairy products set off an attack so mayby try cutting that down to see if it helps ?

Ginger Tea

M: Nice to hear your success story.

If I might suggest, the late, master, herbalist Dr Christopher developed an herbal formula along the same lines of your current list w/ the addition of more essential ingredience like Fennel, Peppermint, Goldenseal (or other natural antibiotics like Oregano, Garlic). If you wish, you could add all-the-above and make your own formula of powdered herbs and put them in capsules. Just saying.

Using menthol cough drops or lozenges is good way to melt cholesterol gallstones ( I use 3 loz's back-to-back to help open up bile flow). If stones are mixed or heavy calcified one may need to do a gallbladder flush. The herb Chanca Piedra is also good for gallbladder and/or liver problems.

Caraway Seeds
Posted by Alla (Los Angeles) on 05/20/2015
★★★★☆

There are a couple of herbs with anti-spasmodic properties: dill, fennel, caraway seed, cumin, peppermint in lesser degree. They are all relatives, except peppermint. When I feel pain coming in I take 1/3 of tea spoon of caraway seeds and chew them, then swallow. It helps to take the spasms off and does not interfere with digestion. The ACV works also, but the mechanics are different, it reduces need for bile, so it does not try to get out of the gallbladder, so no pain, but you need bile to digest fats and proteins.

There is an over the counter medication in Europe, called No-Shpa. It is widely used to alleviate gallstone attacks and spasms. I do not know if it exists here, the active ingredient is dropaverine.

I use ACV with meats, just pour over a piece. And take some caraway seeds in the end of the meal. Also, add caraway seeds in soups and other dishes.

Just my 5c, :)

WARNING!

I had the attacks without the stones. found out my sisters also had the same thing ...sadly my oldest sister died from GALLBLADDER CANCER. Very rare. My youngest sister and I had adhesions so bad it squeezed our gallbladder in a very small size. mine was larger then a golf ball! ..went to local, backwoods, ER a few times when I was having attacks and they did the same stupid testing to see if I had stone ...hello you don't need stones to have attacks! Makes me mad all the testing I went through and money spent just to be wrongly diagnosed. My oldest sister went through the same ordeal. Please if they tell you you don't have stones so nothing is wrong ...go to a different hospital or dr and get a second opinion. I got lucky and found a great surgeon that knew what he was doing. gl ....oh before the surgery I was taking Dandelion root, milk thistle , apple cider ...you name it ...

Lavender Oil

Wow. After supper last night my sister had another severe gallbladder attack. We already ran out of pain pills and after $4000+ in urgent care bills she decided she didn't want to spend that much again just for acetaminophen. After searching the web we tried the Apple Cider Vinegar/Apple Juice mixture. After 3 minutes she threw it up sending her into worse pain then before. We tried the ACV and apple juice once before to try to help with the pain and she had the same reaction, vomiting and worse pain. Then we saw the one comment about 1 drop of PURE ESSENTIAL OIL OF LAVENDER IN A TALL GLASS OF WATER SIPPED SLOWLY BUT STEADILY. She said it tastes terribly bitter but Praise the Lord, within 5 minutes the pain level went from 10 down to 7 and she stopped shaking from the pain. Thank you so much Jim for sharing your discovery of this use for Lavender oil. I hope the ACV and apple juice works for those of your reading this, but if not please try the lavender oil. I'm so glad we did!

I'm keto and I have been for over three years August 2021 was my third year so it's just seems kind of weird that I was having issues at the beginning of the year? Now preparing for a flush I started drinking Malic acid daily I made it into a lemonade and I would drink it daily instead of apple juice to soften my stones. And I thought I had it figured out but boy was I surprised so yes I do eat plenty of fat thank you.

Triggers
Posted by Nick (Hobart, Tasmania) on 08/24/2017

Yes, I agree cutting dairy seems to work. I take Vits C D E along with lecithin depending on the meal. I have capsules and the granules. I also take flaxseed, milk thistle granules mostly daily which helps the liver too.

Chocoloate, dairy and fried foods seem to be my triggers - and eggs although if I space my poached egg meals out I seem to get away with it. I only drink almond milk now (rarely skim milk unless I have to).

Plenty of leafy greens and veg, ginger and ACV is good too.

Two Types of Gallbladder Attacks
Posted by Timh (Ky, Usa) on 02/26/2014 2063 posts

Jewels51: To strengthen the Liver/Gallbladder and increase the flow of bile take Triple Strengthen Lecithin and Dr. Christopher's Liver/Gallbladder Formula. There are many herbal suppliers w/ different names to this formula. The one I used to take was called Liveron. An internet search should produce some good results, but if not report back and I can give you the list of the home made formula I use.

I also occasionally use lemon Water to help open things up down there.

Symptoms of a Gallbladder Attack
Posted by Steve (Uk) on 11/25/2023

If you take Tums or other similar treatments such as galvaston your stomach acid pH will be on the alkaline side and will not break down and digest foods/ fats. Do not think because you have heartburn means your gut is acidic, it's the opposite. Try using Betain hcl or swedish bitters.

Note: majority of heartburn/ reflux products will have aluminum and are dangerous. Use food grade bicarbonate 1tsp in water.

I am going to try and get some sleep as it is 4:30 am.

Castor Oil Packs

I used to do it that way, now I just cut a plastic the size I need, lay it on the bathroom counter, and bend over placing the piece of plastic I poured as much castor oil on as would hold. I place a light towel over the plastic and lay with a heating pad. Easy and less castor oil waste. I use organic oil. Can be costly.

I suffer from gall bladder pain (I guess they are called gall bladder attacks) and have tied the pain to oily food and also nuts. I take the apple cider vinegar in apple juice as prescribed on Earth Clinic whenever I get an attack, but it still takes a few days for the pain to go away. Eliminating fatty and oily foods during this period is essential to healing.

Avoid Lettuce

I have a sluggish gullbladder with no stones. I have had this problem for years and what I found is lettuce was causing most my attacks. After I stopped eating lettuce I don't have as many attacks and they are rarer than when I ate lettuce. I am now going to write down what I ate before every attack and see if there is a common link. Some say dairy products too can cause you problems. Next attack I will try the ACV and apple juice and add some baking soda in the mix for good measure. Thanks your site is awesome.

Multiple Remedies

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm in week 3 of this attack which is coming and going now. Gone at the moment, enough to make me think I can leave for my vacation on Friday.

Since my emergency room stay, where they told me it could be shingles or "something metastasized into the area" - loved that one - I've had a hydascan: normal function and no stones, two chest xrays: nothing, a CT scan on abd and pelvis (mostly looking for kidney stones): nothing. (Yes, I'm glowing a bit at this point from all the radiation) More acupunture, which helps temporarily. NO ONE knows what this is, even though it's obviously classic GB pain. I'm at my wits end with the medical establishment and can't believe this is what we are all paying for - soon to pay more with this Federal bill. All these tests are what drives the cost up, but the tests obviously DON'T WORK.

I've been drinking Apple juice mixed with carrot juice which makes me very gassy and exacerbates the pain. I don't know what to eat anymore.

I've used:
castor oil packs,
ACV,
lemon juice with olive oil,
stonebreaker,
gallstonex,
chinese herbs.
I take Mag citrate every night as a rule.
Use heating pad front and back alternating.
Have taken hot baths with Epsom salts
Use rebounder to move lymph fluid
Charcoal for gas - this really works!

I typically eat very low fat (less than 20 grams per day),Veggies, fruit, chicken or fish; next to no dairy or grain, so am perplexed at why this is happening at all. What more can I do to my diet to make my body work correctly? I've spent a fortune over and above my insurance premiums to try to stay well. It's disheartening and scary.

Well, enough of this rant. I'm going to try some more of your suggestions and hope that I don't end up in some Caribbean hospital over the next week or so.

My Best to you all!

Flax Seeds
Posted by Tammy (Grand Island, Ne, Usa) on 05/21/2014

I love flax seeds. I going to try the tea recipe. My daughter is having these attacks. I'm using homeopathy to help, but I like the tea idea. The homeopathy, in case any are interested, is: Biliousness for the pain and Chamomile for nausea. It takes a little while to work when it's bad, but it does work. I hope anyone that's having these pains, can use these ideas and save money from surgery.

Flax Seeds
Posted by Jeanne (New York, NY) on 10/25/2009

Kelly's flax tea recipe caught my eye just in time. I just finished my first cup of flax seed tea after eating a very rich Indian dinner earlier tonight, which was starting to give me shooting gall bladder pain! I added half a cinnamon stick to the tea after it had boiled and a half teaspoon of blackstrap molasses since I don't like stevia's after-taste. Yummy! Too soon to tell if it has worked or not, but I think I will make a habit of drinking this regularly. My skin feels softer already. Thanks Kelly!

P.S. I did not grind the seeds before boiling them.

Apple Cider Vinegar, Lettuce
Posted by Eleana (Sweeden) on 03/22/2021

Do you know why? Why lettuce can make it worse? I eat a lot of veggies with lettuce - we just call it lettuce - It is mainly spinach and red cabbage and ruccula - which should be good because of the bitterness.

Lettuce

I had about 15 atleast gallbladder attacks in 2 weeks -hospitalized one night as well and they wanted to take out the gallbladder for my "diamonds" gallstones which I'd had for 16 yrs. at least with no probs. except very sick in my 4 pregnancies because of excess bile... The attacks started due to taking digestive enzymes for 2 days and then going off them. The attacks began the next night with coleslaw, sausages, and saurkraut ..but continued for the next 2 weeks pretty much whatever I ate. In my worst attack I practically crawled to the computer to earthclinic.com. The 1/2 cup lettuce cure came up with 2 yeas. Sent son running to store for it and 20 mins. later after eating the 1/2 c. I had complete relief. As one writer speculated that it stimulated the liver to produce digestive enzymes that would stop the body from calling on the gallbladder to produce digestive bile.. So for the next 24 hrs. I ate nothing but iceberg lettuce -lots of it - and slices of organic apple. The next day I tried out eating whatever I wanted which had caused attacks throughout the prev. 2 wks. (except the cabbage/sausages -bad memory!) Even McDonald's failed to give me an attack. I am so thrilled with this cure of course!

Hearing once recently that digestive enz help people lose a lot of weight, I wonder if the stimulation of the liver a couple times a day with particularly iceberg lettuce (as it's supposed to work the best rather than other lettuces) would be a natural weight loss cure as well? I know it seems to make less of the slight puff around my ankles -more definition. So it might also help with fluid retention. As well my new pretty set wrinkles of 6 mos. ago have almost completely disappeared within a few days of ingesting 3x per day atleast (vertical ones beneath my eyes -not the crow's feet). Try it and I'd love to hear your feedback as I'm a personal trainer and would love to see if it helps people lose weight -at least it brings down the glycemic index of each meal you eat it with some.
