Miscarriage Prevention Treatment

| Modified on Jun 21, 2014

Effective measures to prevent and even treat a miscarriage encompass a holistic approach. Bed rest, adequate nutrition and maintaining a balanced lifestyle are vital aspects of a healthy pregnancy. Additionally, specific herbs and other supplements support the body’s natural hormone levels and prevent miscarriage.

What Is Miscarriage?

A miscarriage is defined as the loss of a fetus prior to the 20th week of pregnancy. Symptoms of miscarriage include progressive bleeding, severe cramps, abdominal pain, fever, weakness and back pain.

While the cause of miscarriage is often difficult to identify, several known contributing factors have been identified. Miscarriages are generally caused by abnormal chromosomes or genes or maternal health conditions.

Natural Treatment for a Healthy Pregnancy

Several factors are involved in maintaining a healthy pregnancy. Preparing the body for conception, maintaining proper nutrition, getting adequate rest and taking appropriate nutritional supplements are all components of a regimen for a healthful pregnancy. Additionally, specific herbs including chaste tree berry, cramp bark and partridge berry may be taken prior to and during pregnancy to prevent miscarriage.

Chaste Tree Berry

Also known as Vitex, chaste tree berry has been used extensively by midwives and herbalists to prevent miscarriage. Vitex is particularly effective for treating miscarriage related to low progesterone as it develops and maintains stable levels of progesterone. Chaste tree berry is most effective when used at least three months prior to conception.

Cramp Bark

Cramp bark is generally used to prevent miscarriage that presents as recurrent. This herb works to support a healthy pregnancy in a number of ways including reducing spasm of the uterine muscles and ovaries as well as relaxing the muscles and relieving irritation.

Partridge Berry

Partridge berry is another treatment option for preventing miscarriage. This herb is generally used as a uterine tonic that works to strengthen a weak uterus. Additionally, partridge berry has been shown to reduce cramping, bleeding and uterine spasm.

The occurrence of a miscarriage is unfortunate and difficult from which to recover. Nonetheless, proper nutrition and dietary supplements prior to, during and after conception support overall health and maintain a healthy pregnancy.

I have had a hard time finding information about miscarrying naturally and how to manage it naturally at home, so I am going to share my story.

I am 46 and just recently had my third miscarriage. (Not in a row. I do have 9 living children. ) With my first miscarriage I had had a sonogram and knew the baby had died. I was ten weeks. I bled for 3 weeks and the miscarriage never completed. I had a D & C. I was not thrilled about having surgery but did not know what else to do. The second time I was 9 weeks along or so and knew from a sonogram that the baby had died. It took about 2 weeks of bleeding but this miscarriage did complete at home. (I did have a trip to the ER in there for excessive bleeding, but my blood count was okay and I stabilized and was able to return home. ) With this most recent baby, I found out the baby had died at about 6 weeks gestation. I was 9 weeks along when I found this out by a sonogram. I had gone in for one when I started bleeding. I was very nervous about the bleeding because I live pretty far from a hospital with OB services and I have a history of bleeding problems and low platelet count. I researched and talked to people. I wanted to be prepared. I had cayenne pepper on hand (which has been known to stop post-partum hemorrhage very quickly - 1 t. In a cup of warm water - I have never done that but would if needed it. ) and I ordered Shepherd's Purse tincture. Apparently, home birth midwives use this after delivery of babies to reduce risk of bleeding and also during miscarriage, if it is known for sure that the baby has died. (It can cause contractions so isn't appropriate for pregnancy until near time for birth. ) A few days after my bleeding started I had terrible labor-like pain that lasted for hours. My bleeding was picking up a lot and making me nervous. I took 3/8 t. Cayenne pepper (40k heat units) in a cup and a half of grape juice That really helped the bleeding to slow down and also seemed to help some with the pain. (Had the bleeding been more severe I would have taken 1 t. In a cup of grape juice. ) However, I had not yet passed the baby. I bled moderately for two more days. Meanwhile, the Shepherd's purse arrived. I took 20 drops of the tincture a couple of times a day. Then, with no pain at all, the baby did pass. This was confirmed a few days later via sonogram. I took the Shepherd's Purse a couple of times a day following the completion of the miscarriage. This was the shortest time my body has taken to miscarry. This is surprising due to my age and the number of pregnancies I have had. I have a couple of theories though. Since I found out I was pregnant I have been drinking a quart of pregnancy tea a day in hopes that I would have a better labor this time, since my labors have become long and difficult. I suspect that the tea helped prepare and strengthen my womb for the miscarriage. (The tea is 3 parts red raspberry leaf, 1 part nettle leaf, 1 part alfalfa leaf and 1 part peppermint leaf.) You can buy an already made pregnancy tea that is similar to this. I also started using Apple Cider Vinegar daily a couple of years ago. Perhaps that helped my overall health, too. I also know that many people prayed for me during this time and God was merciful to grant me a very easy miscarriage.

I would recommend the pregnancy tea to any pregnant mama, except for those who have trouble with contractions in the first trimester as there is some concern about red raspberry leaf and mint in the first trimester for these women. I recommend ACV to everyone! And everyone should always have on hand cayenne pepper! It will stop bleeding very quickly, whether external or internal. I even keep some in my home and in all of my family's vehicles and each in my family know what to do with it. It may have saved me a trip to the ER this time and has the potential to save a life.
