Natural Remedies for Pterygium

| Modified on Jan 08, 2024

A Pterygium is a fleshy growth on the eyeball. While initially pterygia are usually asymptomatic, they can cause irritating symptoms like burning, itching and tearing of the eye.  Often treatment for pterygia is sought because it is a cosmetic issue. Eventually pterygia can adversely affect vision. Sometimes surgery is performed to remove a pterygium. Natural remedies like castor oil and apple cider vinegar not only reduce the irritation of pterygia, they often are used to heal the pterygia in part or whole.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Raw and organic apple cider vinegar is used to reduce the redness and itching of a pterygia. Apple cider vinegar is diluted with distilled water and used directly in the eye. For complete directions, cautions and side effects, please see this page.

Apple cider vinegar can also be taken internally to alkalize the body, which often helps the body to resolve different health issues.

Activated Charcoal Powder

Activated charcoal powder is diluted in water to make a solution in which to put into the eye.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is soothing to dry eyes and commonly used in the alternative health world to reduce tumors and growths.

Serrapeptase/Nattokinase

Enzymes like serrapeptase and nattokinase dissolve non-living tissue. They are taken internally on an empty stomach to reduce all sorts of different types of growths.

Honey

High quality honey is used to treat a variety of health problems include eye issues. A drop of honey is placed into the eye at bedtime. Initially this can sting. For medical purposes raw honey should be used. Local honey sold in glass jars is preferred.

Protect Your Eyes

You only get one set of eyes; protect them! Pterygia are more common among those who live closer to the equator. It is sometimes called, “surfer’s eye.” According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, it is suspected that UVB light is a root cause of the damage.1 If you are out in the sun a lot, eye wear that blocks UVB light is highly recommended.

Aloe Vera Gel For Pterygium (Hard Lumps Inside Eye):

I had pterygium in my left eye and came to earth clinic. I am currently taking ACV. I've had it for 3 months. The lump was bigger than a pin head and growing. It was hard like a callous compared to rest of eye. I put on aloe vera gel and rubbed on my eyelids an let some seep in. It stung for like 1/10 of a second, next morning it was significantly smaller. I used morning and night by second day it was completely gone. Plus my little red veins from being tired were also gone. Thanks earth clinic!

Did you really have such a succes with Aloe Vera Gel, incredible. You wrote you are taking ACV, can you tell me what that is?

And last but not least, did you talk to a doctor about putting Aloe Vera 'in' your eyes? It sounds to good to be true.

I am taking Dipyrademole eyedrops at the moment. It is completely safe and helps a lot for all the symptoms from Pterygium. Only the red veins are difficult, so I am going to try the Aloe vera Gel for that.

Thank you!

Hi there, I am happy to read about your success with Aloe Vera - can you please confirm - can we take the aloe vera from the leaf and put on the eye lid to get the same results you have? my partner has this pterygium in the left eye and does not want to do the surgery. really looking forward to your response.

Just make sure to let the resin drain out from the leaf first. After you've cut it, lean it upright and wait (maybe 5 - 10mins for a tiny piece enough for one eye) for the yellowy liquid to drain out. Rinse it off with water, and then use the pure aloe vera GEL only. (I got this info from: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/how-to-make-aloe-vera-gel#directions).

Also be sure you're using the actual species Aloe Vera (there are other species in the genus which get lumped in being commonly called aloe vera even if they're a different species, so get the exact right plant).

My wife has pterygium in both eyes. We have tried all but just recently stopped eating all types of sugar and salt and the pterygium has lower dramatically and the swallows veins also. Also, take potassium foods that will lower salt in your body and will help reduce inflammation. This has helped lower blood sugar and arterial tension in the eyes.

best of luck

Dear Friend, for Pterigium in eye, I suggest Homeo medicine 'Zinc Mettalicum liquid 6x potency thrice a day in half cup of water at early stage of Pterigium. If it is chronic case use Zinc Met 200 weekly once. It will be cured with in 2 to 3 months.
