Remedies for Spinal Cord Injuries

| Modified on Feb 06, 2023

Spinal cord injuries vary greatly and are characterized by damage to the spinal cord or nerves. As these types of injuries often cause permanent damage to the nerves and result in limited muscle function, treatment focuses on regaining nerve sensation and muscle movement. Treatment varies, but several supplements are effective for stimulating the nerves.

What are Spinal Cord Injuries?

Described as damage to any part of the spinal cord or the nerves associated with the spine, a spinal injury generally causes problems with strength, sensation and muscle function. The condition may involve partial or complete loss of motor function and result in some level of paralysis.

Natural Treatments for Traumatic Spine Injuries

Treatments for spine injuries center on stimulating the nervous system and regaining muscle function. While damage can often not be reversed, several natural treatments enhance the function of the nerve cells and offer individuals at least limited sensation. Cayenne pepper, DMSO and turmeric are among the most effective natural treatment options.

Cayenne

Cayenne is a natural remedy used to treat a variety of conditions. The spice contains a potent amount of capsaicin, which functions to stimulate circulation and blood flow. As it generates effective circulation, it also enhances sensory communication, which can aid in recovery.

DMSO

DMSO is a dietary supplement used to treat a variety of conditions. A natural anti-inflammatory and pain reliever, the treatment eliminates swelling that may be contributing to spinal cord injury and limited function. The treatment also eliminates infection from the body, which may also be contributing to the condition.

Turmeric

Turmeric is known as one of the most powerful preservers of walking ability associated with spinal cord injuries. This compound is comprised of curcumin, which functions to relieve and reduce inflammation. By reducing inflammation, severe nerve damage is prevented and recovery is enhanced. The compound also aids in the rebuilding of brain cells.

While spinal cord injuries are often debilitating, effective treatment can prevent some levels of damage and restore nerve and muscle function. Natural supplements reduce inflammation and stimulate the nervous system to promote healing and recovery.

Cauda Equina Syndrome

Posted by Cartermalik (Abbottabad, Pakistan) on 10/23/2014

Hello!

Cauda Equina Syndrome is the spinal nerve roots damaging disease.

I am suffering from cauda equina syndrome, my legs are not able to move or walk on my feet. I use wheel chair, I have numbness in my both legs, I don't have any pain in my spine area or in legs, but I have numbness. I don't have sexual and urinary bladder control; after this condition my doctor neurosurgeon told me that is cauda equina syndrome's symtoms

Now help me out what I should go for?

Which treatment will fully help me be back on my feet as I was before spine surgery (LS4-LS5).

I suffered a SCI in August 2012, when driver of car fell asleep at wheel and rolled us. C6/C7 Quad AsiaC Incomplete. I found out about DMSO about 2 months ago. I did extensive research, including finding out the creator Dr Jacob was still alive retired in Oregon and his nurse Rita still works one day a week on Wed for 4 hours. I personally talked to her and told her my situation. She suggested I take liquid form 2x day and gel 2x a day.

I have gel rubbed on my neck above my injury, palms of my hands, and soles of feet. I started taking on 5/14/14. I take half the meds I use to now. Full disclosure, I also been taking Jusuru since 2/21/14 because it has hylauronic acid which I found out helps nerve regeneration. After 10 days of taking 4oz 2x a day, my nerves started burning and activating. Once I added DMSO my nerves are constantly activating and tingling/ burning. Burning is mostly day after I do extensive therapy. My regiment is as follows: MWF therapy, Jusuru/DMSO 2x a day, accupuncture Th/Sat. On 6/2/14 I walked 50ft with my trainer and no equipment help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5SRzEhv3Yo&feature=youtu.be I believe it's a combination of everything I was doing, taking, and staying consistent. No magic pill or formula, just a lot of research, hard work, being consistent, and able to deal with nerve burning regenerating. www.jacoblab.com and www.dmso.org

Frank, great to hear of your progress. My daughter also has a SCI C5 incomplete. August 20 1213 injury date. She has been suffering horribly from Autonomic Dysreflexia, nausea and vomiting. I'm wondering if you could explain better your DMSO intake especially the liquid. Also how bad was the burning sensation 1 to 10?

On http://www.cancertutor.com/spine/ they have a SCI tab that mentions a Helichrysum essential oil with the same nerve burning and a claim that one man did very well in his recovery and another gave up because of the nerve pain, it also mentions that another fella used it to help with hearing loss .

I'm not quite sure of the amounts and how you were using the liquid DMSO when you mention the 4OZ 2X daily. if you could clarify the amounts and how...are you mixing the DMSO with water? or just ingesting 4oz of pure DMSO.

Also I read of an amazing story in one of Dr. Jacobs books on MSM of a SCI patient and his mother that were using DMSO intravenously at time of his accident in the ICU with outrageous results. When the hospital refused to allow and stopped using the DMSO he lost all function...they finally forced the hospital to resume the DMSO intravenously, after a very long time (even having to testify in front of congress), He started to return his function again. Its an amazing story.

You get DMSO at animal feed stores in the veterinary medicine section. The highest grade of DMSO is 99.85 % the only impurity found in DMSO is water so its not gonna hurt ya.

I believe Oregon state university has or had a unit studying dmso for many years. You might be able to get good info there.

Dr. Jacobs said he used to drink one ounce of dmso daily for more than 40 years.

If you get a headache from drinking dmso then you might have a fungal infection along with everything else. In that event try drinking a few drops of tea tree oil in a huge glass of water. Tastes horrible but relieves candida and mold related issues in a hurry.

I suffered a T2-T4 spinal cord injury Im considered incomplete ASIA C parapeligic. I was rear ended in a car accident on November 2015. I have been doing alot of research on nerve regeneration and things that can help me. I would love to try DMSO. I just do not know how much of the percentage I should use and how many times a day. I also read that if you mix tumeric along with the DMSO it will also help as there is a compound in Tumeric that is also known to regenerate nerves.

HI U MARIA,,,,,,,,,,, first you must gain knowledge and no one is going to take you to raise. You must gain this knowledge yourself. There are several books you can buy. Any on DMSO by Dr Jacobs will do, or the one by Dr. Morton Walker is the one I have. What I would like you to do is to read until you are give out and then read some more. That way, you will become an expert and can then tell others how to use DMSO.

What you want is a walk in the park..... A feel good thing and I am not that guy. But if you will heed my consul, you will heal yourself with knowledge. It's called Boot Camp. You won't like it while participating, but you will be proud of yourself when you are healed. Because you did it yourself and then you can help others.

I wish you well. =======ORH======

My cat broke her back 10 weeks ago and hasn't walked since. Her spinal cord was not severed but only had limited use of one back leg. I rubbed DMSO mixed with aloe vera 3 times daily and within 3 days, the leg with no nerve responses started twitching and she started moving it. On the 4th day, she stood up twice. Still not walking but getting more use of both legs and making progress. I don't believe it was coincidence. I started rubbing on peroxide over back today to oxygenate her system and help with regeneration. DMSO is miraculous and FDA should not stop it's use.

Hi Ruchi,

DMSO is good and has the capability of penetrating through the skin and carries along what ever you mix with it, in Kathy's case it appears that she has mixed aloe vera essential oil. In Spinal Cord Injuries, if you mix magnesium oil with DMSO that also will give the relief from pain and help in the movements.

Good Luck, Baldev

I am writing regarding my husband's success at treating Myelomalacia (softening of the spinal cord) resulting from 2 spinal cord tumor surgeries. Upon receiving notice that the tumor had returned yet a 3rd time we got busy researching and came up with a protocol for life. First, don't accept the pronouncements that you won't get better! You can!

My husband drinks Chaga tea every day- 12 oz mug, at least 2-3 times a day, then an Intervenous Vitamin C treatments every month from our Naturopath, also Infra-red Saunas once a week. He takes much turmeric, Vitamin D3, Magnesium, and Chinese herbs ( Chin-ko @ Curcuma, and Zedoaria Tablets- both with a long list of ingredients and both Seven Forest brand), CoQ10, and organic unrefined coconut oil. He eats less, but more healthy meals, green salads, green superfood drink, and goes fishing/hunting when he can for enJOYment.

The tumor has decreased in size, as well as the area softened and effected by the surgeries... The MRI technician just smiled this last time and said "See ya in 1 year! " And we just wish to say we are so very grateful to EarthClinic for all the great advice we have received for so many years by all the contributors, and also dear Ted from Bangkok. We hope this helps someone out there...

It has been another year since I have posted regarding my husband's condition... He just had another MRI, and the radiologist never mentioned seeing any myelomalacia on the MRI. There is still work to do with regards to nerve damage from surgery, but this post is to give people hope, and to keep your chins high, and keep looking for your healing. Also make sure that your sleep is sufficient, Best Wishes!

I'm a 68 yr. old disabled combat veteran of Vietnam. I've had numerous back injuries over the decades starting in 1967 and an enemy anti-tank mine and in '68 two helicopter crashes. I retired in 2002 after 10 years as a working Rancher / Cowboy. In 2011 the VA gave me a 120cc steroid injection for a painful bulging L-4 disc. They missed and injected directly into the bulging disc...it exploded into fragments resulting in Caudal Equina Symptom. I was not expected to every walk again. It took me 16 months to gradually get back on my feet.

In Oct. 2011 I was broadsided by an SUV and that damaged my T-9 disc. T-9 follows the dermatome pathway from T-9 around your rib cage at the bottom all the way to the front of your rib cage. The pain is pretty bad just under the lower last rib on the right side.

I ordered a Dermatome Chart from Amazon.com its a plastic coated Medical Chart that shows you the nerve pathway of every spinal nerve from the spine to its conclusion. L-4 damage travels from the source down the Butt, across the right side of the thigh to the knee. After that it runs along the right side of the shin down to the ankle where it crosses to the inner arch to the big toe. This pathway is usually numb and subject to spasms and intense cramping.

Therefore we tend to treat the area of "symptom"... not the area of "origin".

I use a combination of Magnesium, Turmeric, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Benfotiamine, Vitamin B-12 complex and B-12 injectable and supplements of B-2 and B-6.

This one dose stops the pain from muscle spasms for up to 5 days. After 3 months its now up to 2 weeks. I'm going to begin adding DMSO with herbal "Helichrysum essential oil". I believe the last two will lead from "treatment" to "cure".

No one but you will take the needed time and effort to research a cure for your medical problems. Be proactive, this is the only body you will ever have... don't leave it care solely up to others.

The Internet has over 20 billion pieces of information from centuries of research. The answers is there, you just have to find it....because no one else will.

I'm also thinking that 100% pure pharmaceutical Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide 30%, diluted 2/3rds with distilled water and applied with DMSO has potential too.

DMSO with "Helichrysum essential oil" has been found to be very effective in healing stubborn skin ulcers from Diabetes. These are the beginnings of losing limbs.

Research is showing that combining DMSO with "Helichrysum essential oil" applied directly to the wound aids in rapid healing. Its even effective on wounds which have rejected all FDA approved prior treatments.

I hope this is helpful.

I discovered this site recently when my quadriplegic son and I contracted Scabies and it was a huge help to get rid of it. So, thought I would contribute some valuable lessons learned on how to keep your quadriplegic loved one healthy. My son broke his neck 11 years ago in a surfing accident and is a C4/C5 complete. The average life after injury for someone with this severity of being paralyzed is about 10 years, and usually includes a host of medical problems: Urinary tract infections, bedsores, pneumonia, etc. Bobby is very healthy and happy. We founded a nonprofit org to help other paralyzed individuals and their families cope with living as a quad (www.cantkeepmedown.org) We have learned over the years what works to keep him healthy and to keep him from taking a ton of meds everyday as most doctors try to shove so many medicines into quads, which sometimes makes things worse. He can only feel from his nipples down. However, he does have movement in his right arm enough to lift it up and down. So, he has a custom brace on his right hand allowing us to insert a pencil, eraser end down, into it so that he can use it to push down on a wireless keyboard set next to him. This has been a lifesaver from boredom for him. He has a hobby making surf films. He was 22 and on his way to becoming pro when he was slammed onto the beach when he went over the falls from riding a huge wave. This hobby of making films has also allowed him to stay connected to his surf buddies and the surfing community. He has many friends who are pros and really good local surfers who go on surf trips and save some surf footage for him that he uses to make some amazing surf films. He's made 6 thus far and is working on his 7th film. In the beginning we'd sell them in the surf shops and on the internet. They even made a movie about him called "Can't Keep Me Down" still on sale all over the internet. We just give them away now to friends and people who need to hear about his inspiring story of courage and renewal.

So, we've learned some amazing remedies to keep him healthy. Since Bobby and I began taking extra virgin coconut oil in April 2009, we have not had a cold or flu, or even been sick! Bobby used to get urinary tract infections (UTIs) on a regular basis - hasn't had one since we started using the coconut oil (co). Bobby used to get bed sores from skin breakdown a lot, especially the first few years. He still gets them occasionally, but now they never go beyond the blister stage. We found these amazing bandages called Alyven Adhesive that get rid of them quickly. Put one on the blister and leave for 4 days, remove bandage they they are nearly gone! Amazing. I've seen some ugly side effects from quads who tried many remedies to cure their stage 3 and 4 bedsores to no avail. These bandages are very expensive, but well worth it. We keep them on hand at all times. Christopher Reeve died from complications from a bed sore. Anyway, we're here to help answer any questions you might have about quads and how to keep them healthy and overcome the many challenges that face them on a daily basis.

For all of you precious people out there who are living with this difficult life, I pray you have comfort in knowing that there is hope for a full and happy life. My son has spoken to many groups of young people over the years and he has honestly told them that he is happier now than he was before he was paralyzed. He has found a new Hope in a place that he likes to share with others whenever the opportunity arises. Take care and please write. We are here for you. Lori

Lori, you are correct about the sort of healthcare quads recieve from conventional medicine. I once nursed a c/4 that had just returned from Sheppard in Atlanta and he was on lots of meds, some neccessary & helpful, some not. I recommended cranberry for the uti which also required the extract capsules. The chronic antibiotics created severe yeast infection with all the nasty side effects that go with it. I recomended my patient to report the problem to urologist and was prescribed nystatin with good results. Patient has continued a somewhat conventional treatment lifestyle, his health has worsened, assets depleted, and now living in log-term care facility. Yes, extra care is badly need for such extreme conditions.

Just finished Joni Earickson's book Joni and am now reading her second book A Step Further. She has a wonderful ministry and website Joni And Friends. http://www.joniandfriends.org/

Lots of luck to you and son.

J: For a local remedy, use a very strong magnet directly over the injured area for several minutes daily or sleep with a Magnet Pad beneath the area for 8hrs. Magnets remove bad energy, infections, and waste products like acid, inflammation, and pain. Once all these obstacles are removed healing can occur.

A very good multivitamin/mineral/whole food supplement 2x daily with meals is very important for producing the enzymatic actions needed for all body functions, and along with a healthy diet will go a long way for healing.

For healing in particular, Therapeutic doses of Zinc plus preventive doses of Copper and Vit-A all contribute to healing. Another natural healer is Omega 3 Fatty Acids or EFA's like Fish, Krill, or Flax Oil along with a diet consisting of regular Salmon, Mackerel, and Sardines. The EFA's are very fragile in nature so they need to be kept refrigerated in storage and need antioxidant nutrients like Selenium, Vit-E, and CoQ10 in the body to prevent damage. Meet these standards & recommendations and the body's healing ability greatly increases. EFA's are particularly recommended for brain and nerve health. Chlorella is also another good natural cleansing & healing food.

Of course I have gone over-the-line in the healing dept from simply answering your request for natural remedies for relaxation, so two items come-to-mind are the amino acids GABA and Threonine. And there are herbs like Valerian, Hops, Passionflower, and Chamomile for relaxation. A homeopathic remedy which has long been a favorite of mine is Hyland's Calms Forte'.
